With my father's assistance, I spent this past weekend installing a Florida limestone rock barrier along the motor courtyard's driveway curb at Villa Festiva. The curb was so shallow, that visitors could easily drive over it and would end up accidentally crushing the Geraniums. This should hopefully alleviate that problem. Also some of the extra rock was installed alongside a block walkway leading to the pool.

In 1998 the first issue of Vero Beach Magazine was published and on the cover was the interior courtyard of the Villa Festiva--a property I now maintain and help flourish. For their special 20th Anniversary Issue in January 2018, they wanted to again feature the residence. I am very proud of how well everything looked and only wished there had been more pictures of the outside gardens and landscaping as it is filled with some very unique plants.

With this garden featured in a recent publication, I thought I'd post some pictures and more information on it. Quite a few years back, my father and mother designed this garden for Villa Festiva, the oldest residence on the ocean in Vero Beach. They called it the "Under The Sea" garden and filled it with plants that looked quite similar to what one might find on the ocean's floor. This garden was first featured in the 2012 The Garden Conservancy's Open Days Directory and I am now responsible for helping this little garden flourish and also the large estate gardens surrounding it.

Tallahassee is expecting snow overnight and tomorrow. Thought maybe someone might like to see how nice the Historic Capitol looked this week before the flowers are blanketed in snow.

The center driveway planter for this Vero Beach residence had become overgrown and a change was deemed necessary. Dioon spinulosum had circled the center Canary Date Palm and they were transplanted elsewhere onsite. In their place were planted Strelitzia reginae 'Kirstenbosch Gold', Gazania for color, and an Aloe 'Candy Corn' to help conceal the electrical box for the landscape lighting. Both the homeowner and I were quite pleased with the outcome.

Although it took almost a year and a half, I have finally acquired the white form of Bulbine frutescens! There is some discussion regarding the identity of this plant, comparing it to Bulbine triebneri, however, regarding the growth habit and coloration, I concur with the majority that this is indeed a Bulbine frutescens 'Alba'. Enjoy!

2016 has been a year of change. After having worked by my Father's side these past four years, I took over MacLeod Horticultural Services in May and have been busy this past summer learning the business in depth. Since my clients and their gardens will always be my number one priority, I haven't had any time this year for posting to Facebook. With better time management, however, I hope to rectify that and offer pictures from the 2016 FNGLA Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association show in Orlando this past weekend where I met up with my Dad. For those of you that couldn't attend, I offer this album of a sampling of what was at the show. Absolutely astounding as to the amount of work that went into setting up some of the booths. Enjoy!

Merry Christmas! With all the unseasonably warm weather, we've been so busy trimming that this is the only tree trimming we had time for at the MacLeod Homestead 'Gone Bamboo'. We hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

This week's featured rare plant is originally from Norfolk Island which is near New Caledonia, New Zealand, and Australia. Lagunaria patersonia "Norfolk Island Hibiscus" is related to the common Hibiscus seen locally. This evergreen tree has purple/pink blooms from Spring through Fall here in Florida and is not only drought tolerant, yet is also resistant to salt spray and wind. At Marie Selby Botanical Gardens (the last four pictures shown) there is one that is planted directly on the shore of Sarasota Bay. I have had one planted in a client's garden in full sun on Vero Beach's barrier island since 2009 and not only did it easily handle temperatures into the high 20's, yet grows slowly and is now only about 16' tall. If soil is too alkaline though, a soil acidifier is recommended.

Also as promised this past weekend, pictures of a unique Florida Native plant I recently installed as a hedge at an oceanside estate here in Vero Beach. Many people like the look of the Podocarpus macrophyllus "Japanese Yew", however, there is a Florida Native with the same look. Conocarpus erectus 'Card Sound' is a Florida Native Buttonwood--yes, just like the green and the silver buttonwoods--that has evolved to have narrow long leaves from growing in the Card Sound area of Miami-Dade County. We're looking forward to seeing how well this Florida Native does on the Treasure Coast.
