Spring is officially here, and since it’s finally time to get outdoors, we thought we’d share the story of why we started building catios. The beautiful babies you see on our feed are not our first generation of cats. Once upon a time, we had another trio of incredible felines that moved with us from apt to apt through our young adult life. They longed for sun and fresh air, and would sometimes even get to experience a little supervised time on the balconies, but it wasn’t nearly enough. We bought our house in 2020, complete with a deck and fenced in back yard. They were all older at this point, and didn’t have much interest in going anywhere outside of our space, but MAN, they loved being outside. We got so much joy from watching them walk on grass, chase bugs and rabbits (that they NEVER caught), and feel the breeze in their whiskers, we can’t tell you how grateful we were that they got to experience that, especially knowing what was soon to come. We lost all 3 of them within a year of each other, and though our hearts were broken, we knew that wasn’t the end of our feline family. We slowly opened our home and hearts up again, and we now have our happy tripod again. We knew we couldn’t trust that these former street cats would just hang out in the yard like the old crew, but we would never deny them the chance for fresh air and sunshine EVER again. So, Katie built them a window catio, made plans to turn our balcony into a full size haven, and we realized our mission to help cats have an enriched life in any way possible. Spaces 4 Cats is for our future generations, but we will never forget who laid the foundation for it❤️.
