Our Soul's Work

Our Soul's Work I will transform women's lives by helping them discover and embrace their authentic selves. Come join the journey.

First freeze of the year may hit this week. Jacket and hat weather is here. I like the brisk air. I hope this winter will be kind.

10/18/2024

Still have a warm heart from my time with my sisters. Connecting with family does enrich my life. How about you?

Technology can drive me crazy! It has taken over my life! Anyone trained in modifications on websites?

09/27/2024

Wanting to connect with women experiencing need for support.

09/26/2024

The 8th decade brings many challenges - loss of family members, and friends, as well as more health challenges and less energy and motivation. I am choosing to change my perspective on aging. I still have a lot to share, a lot of possibilities, and capabilities, and I am not throwing in the towel. If you are willing and able, jump in the ring with me.

I have been off Our Soul's Work FB page for too long and was not aware of the newer postings.

I am going back in business with Our Soul's work. Will you reconnect as I work on the website and FB page. Let's begin again. Thank you.

Collins once again:

Dog

I can hear him out in the kitchen,
his lapping the night's only music,
head bowed over the water bowl
like an illustration in a book for boys.

He enters the room with such etiquette,
licking my bare ankle as if he understood
the Braille of the skin.

Then he makes three circles around himself,
flattening the ancient memories of tall grass
before dropping his weight with a sigh on the floor.

This is the spot where he will spend the night,
his ears listening for the syllables of his name,
his tongue hidden in his long mouth
like a strange naked hermit in a cave.

More from "Sailing Alone Around the Room."

Walking Across the Atlantic

I wait for the holiday crowd to clear the beach
before stepping onto the first wave,

Soon I am walking across the Atlantic
thinking about Spain,
checking for whales, waterspouts.

I feel the water holding up my shifting weight.
Tonight I will sleep on its rocking surface.

But for now I try to imagine what
this must look like to the fish below,
the bottoms of my feet appearing, disappearing.

Billy Collins again:

The Dead

The dead are always looking down on us, they say,
while we are putting on our shoes or making a sandwich,
they are looking down through the glass-bottom boats of heaven
as they row themselves through eternity.

They watch the tops of our heads moving below on earth,
as we lie down in a field or on a couch,
drugged perhaps by the hum of a warm afternoon,
they think we are looking back at them,

which makes them lift their oars and fall silent
and wait, like parents, for us to close our eyes.

Billy Collins, "Questions About Angels."

The Hunt

Somewhere in the rolling hills and farm country
that lie beyond speech
Noah Webster and his assistants are moving
across the landscape tracking down a new word.

It is a small noun about the size of a mouse
one that will be seldom used by anyone,
like a synonym for 'isthmus',
but they are pursuing the creature zealously.

as if were the verb 'to be',
swinging their sticks and calling out to one another
as they wade through a field of waist-high barley.

Today, we begin a series of poetry. The first will be from Billy Collins, "Sailing Alone Around the Room."

The Lesson

In the morning when I found History
snoring heavily on the couch,
I took down his overcoat from the rack
and placed its weight over my shoulder blades.

It would protect me on the cold walk
into the village for milk and the paper
and I figured he would not mind,
not after our long conversation the night before.

How unexpected his blustering anger
when I returned covered with icicles,
the way he rummaged through the huge pockets
making sure no major battle or English queen
had fallen out and become lost in the deep snow.
