Did you know plants make their own B1 vitamins?

That means the B1 vitamin transplant fertilizers you’ve seen in nurseries are unnecessary and a waste of your time and resources.

Fertilizer has it’s place and is important, but what goes into that fertilizer is equally important!

With the start of the new year, what changes do you want to see in your life? We asked this question and these were the responses we got: Lose or gain weight, eat better, be more grateful, budget better, declutter/simplify, and, you guessed it, a change to your home’s landscape.

The majority of the answers are pretty vague. We like to get to the root of things. What exactly do you want and, more importantly, why do you want it? If you know why, you know the importance behind it. And if you know the specifics of what you truly want, you can more aptly achieve it!

If you, like many we spoke to, have a desire to change up the landscape around your home, give us a call! Whatever your desired plans, we’re here to listen and implement it!

Misconception: It's too cold to do any landscaping in the winter.

It is absolutely not too cold! There are still plenty of projects you can do, including, but not limited to, sod/artificial turf installs, gravel installs, pretty much all hardscapes, and much more! Sod really should be installed soon though (before the ground freezes) to ensure it thrives.

If you have some projects you'd like help with, give us a call!

Do you share your lawn with a furry friend?

We love our pets, but they can do some pretty crazy things to our lawn! Let's talk about dogs in particular:

Dog f***s and urine are highly acidic and can cause dead spots in your lawn. Not only that, just one gram of dog waste can contain 23 million f***l coliform bacteria, which can contaminate our waterways and cause illnesses in humans. Dogs are a very significant host of bacteria that is harmful to humans. These bacteria, when left to their own devices, will spread their way throughout your yard and house.

This isn’t just hype. In 1991 the EPA designated dog waste as an environmental pollutant, placing it in the same category as pesticides. If not cared for properly, you could infect yourself, your family, or really anyone (if dog p**p is left on public property) with parvo, trichinosis, whipworms, hookworms, roundworms, giardia, coccidia, and other troublemakers.

Luckily, cleaning up your dog's p**p regularly reduces the chances of contracting any of these nasty parasites/infections. So keep that lawn clear of dog p**p and definitely be sure to clean it up before mowing, as this will spread it all over your lawn!

As always, if you have any questions regarding your landscaping, give us a call! We love hearing from our clients and friends!

Planning on putting in some gravel?

Did you know different sizes and grades of gravel/crushed stone have different uses? For instance, some would think that more uniform or washed gravel would be better, but it is better to have a degree of variance in size if you want more compaction (ie for use as a driveway or where more foot traffic will be). More variance also creates less dust.

For more information, read on...

Crushed rock and gravel can be used for many different projects—from driveway construction to erosion control to decorative mulch.

Common sizes:
*Larger pieces of 2½ inches or more can be used for erosion control and also work well as decorative stone cover.
*Crushed stone between 1 and 2½ inches is often used in construction, for instance, to make cement or control mud.
*Rock that’s 3/4–1 inch can replace a traditional lawn or be used as an edging material or to call attention to water features. It’s the most popular size for homeowners and is typically available in many colors.
*At the 1/4–3/8 inch size, crushed rock can be walked on and driven over, so it may be used in pathways or driveways. You can also use it as mulch around plants. Unlike traditional mulch, such as wood chips, it won’t decay or draw pests.
*Crushed rock that’s smaller than 1/4 inch can be used to improve traction on icy surfaces and to fill in the spaces between larger stones.

Crushed rock comes in different grades depending on the percentage of “fines” in the mix. Fines are any bits of rock smaller than the size indicated. So for 3/4-inch rock, for instance, fines would mean anything less than 3/4 inch all the way down to dust.

Grades of material
*Minus: This grade can contain up to 80% fines.
*Screened: This means some of the fines have been sifted out, leaving perhaps 20%–40% fines in the batch.
*Sized. This grade should have no more than 15% fines.
*Washed. These rocks are usually a pretty uniform size because they’ve been washed to remove the fines.

If you're considering a gravel project, don't hesitate to give us a call. We're always here to help!

Who loves food?

How about the outdoors?

Now how about the combination?

According to a survey, 82% of homeowners are more interested in outdoor rooms than they were prior to the pandemic. While we could go on and on about the negatives a pandemic brings, the positives are what we come to value more - quality time with family, friends and the outdoors. What better way to check all of those boxes in the comfort of your own home than to create more outdoor living?

If you're interested in how you can accomplish this for your own home, give us a call!
