I found these two jerks making out on a vineyard today. They’re called Western Grape leaf Skeletonizers. Adult moths emerge and lay eggs on the underside of grape leaves. A Skeletonizer caterpillar will eat all of the lamina (green part) and leave only the mid rib and veins.

Caterpillars and insects with simple digestive systems consume nitrate nitrogen as their food source, so we use analysis and precision nutrient management to synthesize nitrogen in the leaf to a complete protein. By converting nitrate nitrogen into the amino form, we eliminate the food source for insect pests. No nitrate in the leaves means starvation for the insect pests.

The vines are flowering in Southern California. To identify nutrient demand in this critical developmental stage, we use sap analysis to identify and correct nutrient deficiencies. Imbalances can be corrected before leaves show symptoms of deficiency. I’ve included some shots of the waxy green sheen on the leaves to display the abundance of nutrients in the vines.

I read an interesting article about . I’ll add the link in the comments. FRINJ is growing tropical plants in Southern California! I think we should all pay more attention to brands that rely on biodiversity to regenerate soil ☑️ I shared a snapshot of the article in one of the slides.

I had an opportunity to taste a couple weeks ago, and I found myself doing something completely bizarre. I treated the cup of coffee like a glass of wine. As I took my first sip, I thought - this coffee is aromatic like wine. I picked up ripe cherry, bell pepper, sage, spice (like anise).

What is California wine country’s best-kept secret? It’s the fun wine lovers discover in Temecula. This California wine region is a compact valley with only 40+ wineries just north of San Diego.

Famous Varietal: Syrah

AVA to Know: Temecula

Why is it great for wine grapes? Two gaps in the north-south coastal mountain range –the Rainbow Gap and The Santa Margarita Gap—allow cooling influence from the Pacific Ocean 22 miles from Temecula to moderate its vineyard temperatures. Temecula’s elevation of 1,500 feet is another moderating factor.

Just an hour north of San Diego County, Temecula is typically dry and warm. There is a cooling breeze coming through the gap in the coastal mountains, but this is desert-like territory. Shorts, sleeveless shirts will serve you well. Temecula is upscale wine country. You can wear nice shoes here since hiking on dirt trails will be at a minimum, if at all.
