Dustin Sypher’s Bio and Artist’s Statement :
I have steadily worked toward my dream of working in the arts through the medium of steel and iron using old blacksmithing methods. I also explore: color, movement, organic, geometric, and figurative images on paper using pastels, pencils and in encaustics as well. In the spring of 2004, I studied under Frank Turley in Santa Fe, NM. I then took a Maste
r Blacksmithing class in the Aspen Valley, in Carbondale, CO. This led to a job working on homes in the Aspen Valley which after a year, I returned home to Kansas to pursue sculpture and blacksmithing. I enjoy the processes of fabricating, forging, and sculpting with emphasis in design details. I contribute to the preservation of a lost art—forging metal. Everywhere I go, I see the necessity, and practicality of art and design. I have a strong desire to extend appreciation for the fundamental importance of the arts. Artist’s Statement:
It’s fun to go exploring because I never know who I might meet or what I might find. I go to scrap yards and farms and find unique pieces and rescue them. Then, I take that piece and make it into something that is either functional or artistic. By changing the object by using: fire, the anvil, a hammer, and a welder, a new direction and life come into being. It is a lot of fun meeting new people, seeing new places, finding new things, and discovering new ideas. Sometimes the work may take the form of a memorial bench, fence, or sculpture, and sometimes my work is spontaneous, and simply made for the joy of creating it.
