What is channel rot/channeling for a sewer?

Well, this is what typically happens in older styles of sewer piping, such as cast iron, clay, concrete, asbestos, or Orangeburg. What this is, is the water eroding the pipe, similar to how the Grand Canyon formed over time, creating a channel and eventually resulting in the bottom no longer being intact. Some of the things that can happen after this occurs are a full collapse of your sewer line, sinkholes, soil contamination, and sewage backups in your home. It is not recommended to cable or jet these lines unless you are a professional, due to the risk of creating an even worse situation, potentially getting the equipment stuck in the line or further jeopardizing the line by breaking it. WHY DOSES MY SEWER LOOK LIKE IT HAS WARTS?

Most people walk right past their sewer without even realizing there are many problems going on inside. One of the early signs that the pipe is failing in cast-iron and copper drain lines is that they will begin to acquire a growth on the pipe, also known as sewer warts. These little growths on the pipe are actually holes in the pipe that have crusted over multiple times, often going unnoticed. They'll emit a strange smell like sewer gas, and most people don't know where it's coming from. It's always good to have a plumber check your entire system once a year, much like a doctor. The earlier we can catch things, the longer the system lasts. This will also help prevent really costly damage when the pipe itself starts leaking and flooding the home. Typically, anything coming out of the drain harbors bacteria, which leads to mold growth at more rapid rates. Here's a photo of sewer warts growing on a customer's pipes.
