Looking for a fun Northwoods getaway?

We spent a weekend exploring Rhinelander, Wisconsin and packed a lot into just a few days.. tent camping, kayaking, fishing, local food, and even a surprise downtown car show and community festival.

We rented kayaks from Mel's Trading Post , paddled Lake Julia, explored the Wisconsin River, enjoyed lakeside dining, and discovered one of the cutest breakfast spots we've visited in a long time.

The weather didn't always cooperate, but that's part of the adventure. Some of our favorite moments ended up being the ones we hadn't planned for.

If you're looking for a destination with lakes, rivers, outdoor recreation, and plenty of Northwoods charm, Rhinelander is worth adding to your list.

A big thank you to Explore Rhinelander for hosting our visit and helping us discover so much of what the area has to offer.

What's your perfect Northwoods weekend: paddling, fishing, camping, or all three?

So this is what Facebook apparently thinks I need to get for myself? πŸ˜‚ Maybe next time I'm out and about and someone goes to shake my hand, I'll slap this on them and make them come on a hike with me?
Here's to getting arrested! ☠️

Who knows where I am?
I've driven by so many times but never stopped (I guess because I'm not a tourist I didn't get trapped until now)
I love the weird and random stops like these!

Yep, this is me looking a little crazy about scoring these giant cans of freeze dried camping food on Facebook Marketplace for $20!
(The lasagna is my favorite)

Well.. now that the carrying around an ironing board idea is off the table.. what should I carry around? πŸ€”

I must say, seeing this guy hiking Isle Royale with an ironing board strapped to his backpack is near the top of my list of the strangest things I've seen on the island!
As it turns out, he wasn't hauling it out here for laundry duty. He told me he travels to national parks and other interesting places around the country, then irons a Hawaiian shirt as part of his adventures. Apparently, "extreme ironing" is a real thing!
I have questions. Lots of questions.

While the Upper Peninsula will always be home base, I'm starting to fill my summer calendar with adventures in Wisconsin and Minnesota too. πŸš—πŸŒ²

Of course there will be plenty of camping, hiking, kayaking, fishing, waterfalls, and scenic drives...

But I'm also on the hunt for quirky roadside attractions, great local food, hidden gems, festivals, giant things, and anything else that makes you say, "Well, we HAVE to stop and see that."

(I'm looking at you, World's Largest Potato Masher. πŸ₯”πŸ˜‚)
The weirder, the better.
So help me out!

What are your favorite places in Wisconsin and Minnesota?

Feel free to leave suggestions in the comments, tag me in a post if you see something interesting, or send me a message. I'm always looking for new places to explore and feature this summer.

Stopped to pick some lupines from the side of the road today.

They may be overlooked, occasionally stepped on, and growing in less-than-glamorous locations...

But they're still out here adding beauty and sparkle wherever they can.

Basically, we're the same flower! πŸ˜„πŸ’œ

How I imagine all of the mosquitoes chasing after me..
It's kind of like being chased by zombies.. I'm so glad they aren't the fast ones from World War Z! πŸ˜‚

At roughly 110 feet tall, Houghton Douglass Falls is often considered one of the tallest waterfalls in Michigan.

A new trail, footbridge, and viewing area make it easier than ever to experience this impressive Upper Peninsula landmark, whether you're looking for a quick stop or a more adventurous hike.

Just be sure to use caution near the gorge, especially if you're traveling with young children.

Have you visited Houghton Douglass Falls yet?
