✨️👏 🪨 Mark's youngest kid, Emmett, is qualified for the national climbing competition and we couldn't be more proud!

We want to share Emmett’s story — he’s been climbing for seven years and is hoping to head to Salt Lake City this summer for nationals. He’s put a lot of effort into reaching this milestone, and all donations will help cover registration, travel, and housing costs.

Even if you can’t donate, sharing this can help him get closer to his goal and support his big opportunity! 🌟

Way to crush Emmett!!

Another successful Timber Framing with Power Tools class, only at School - Timber Framing and Traditional Trades!

Despite this being a more intimate class with fewer students, we were able to make some great progress throughout the week. On Friday, we had our first outdoor raising of the year of our 14' x 20' 3 bent structure with a dropped tie, wedged 1/2 dovetail tying joint and a stout floor system. We even got to use the telehandler for an exciting twist on our usual hand raisings.

This class was taught by Kyle Murphy of Falling Acorn Timber Frames and Ariel Burns of Maine Heritage Timber Frames, and supported by a fabulous team of apprentices. Sign up next year to get in on the action!

☀️ Here at the shop, winter has finally given way to spring! This past month, we have witnessed the melt in the yard and we're soaking up all the sunshine we can. Our shop kitty, Kumi, is pretty stoked too.

We are currently digging into piles of pine timbers which will become a pavilion. The timber frame, designed for the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust, is collaboration effort between us and our friends at Rabbit Run Builders. This frame will serve as a screened in porch - part of a greater expansion to their headquarters. The addition will provide not only more offices, gardens, parking, and community space, but also be home to youth programming, events, and more.

Read more about their mission & expansion plans here:

We are grateful for the opportunity to work with HHLT, and to support their mission to preserve nature through conservation & education. Good things happen when we join forces with the builders at RRB ! 🐇

💚 INCOMING GOOD NEWS 💚

Its official: Mark and Ariel are proud owners... of a new MHTF Logo!! And fresh swag!! And a NEW WEBSITE!!

What a journey it's been to condense our love of the craft into a meaningful yet simple graphic to represent our company.

While we absolutely loved our design from the talented .art, we decided to work towards a stripped down, simple symbol (way easier said than done).

Darren of took our shared values and distilled them down into this sweet badge you see on the back of the new swag, as well as the other variations.

Shout out to the hardworking for an awesome screen printing job, and for bringing our (camo) dreams to life! 💚

Last but NOT least...

Not only do we now have this new set of logos, new merch, but we also have a BRAND NEW WEBSITE! ✨️👀✨️

Head over to www.maineheritagetimberframes.com (Link in Bio) to see what we've been chipping away at with for the last season. We are so thrilled with it!

Let us know what you think in the comments! 💚🌲

🙏Feeling very humbled by the write-ups in this recent edition of the publication Scantlings.

Swipe to see features about MHTF's '40 for 40' project and the magical 2025 Rendezvous in NH.

The Rendezvous blurbs were written by a few amazing folks involved. These community events are a testament to the deep work the Guild is doing to promote meaningful & inclusive projects to keep our craft alive and well (and have a freakin' blast doing it!)

✨️🩵A Good Winter for Straw Panels 🌾❄️

This winter, we ventured north into sub-zero temps to learn more about a badass building system: locally fabricated straw-insulated structural panels. We learned firsthand from our friends at Croft the nuances of setting their floor, wall and roof panels. Within a couple weeks, a fully insulated, high performance panelizes coalesced on this lakeside site to form a stunning home for a wonderful client. Here are some exciting action shots from the custom build, complete with an obligatory sunset lake shot.

Shout out to Adam LaJoie for his attentiveness & precision with the crane, and to Croft for designing and fabricating this massive beauties, and for inviting us along.

We are beyond grateful to have the option to enclose our timber frames with straw panels as an alternative to foam insulated ones. There are so many benefits to building with bio-regionally available materials, not to mention the efficiencies of pre-fabrication. Be sure to check out the elegant pre-designs offered on their website to learn more about their panels.

🚨🪚Upcoming Class: Timber Framing with Hand Tools!🌲🪓
3/8-3/13 with Ariel Burns and Nick Russell (Tall Pine TF)

There's still a few spots left for Heartwood School's first hand tool class of the year. Click the Link in Bio for Heartwood's website where you can sign up today!

Working as as a team, students will learn to layout, cut and raise a 12' x 16' timber frame BY HAND! We have way too much fun AND get a lot done the old school way with a variety of hand tools. This is what makes timber framing so addictive ✨ Oh and there will be morning yoga stretches...

Other upcoming Heartwood classes with Ariel:
Power Tools with Kyle Murphy - 5/3-5/8
*NEW* Natural Plasters and Paints with Liz Johndrow - 9/28-9/30
and Tadelakt with Liz Johndrow - 10/1-10/2

Woolwich Porch Repair

Though we don't typically tackle timber restoration projects, this was a fun & quick project for our friends in Woolwich, ME. We won't lie, the baked goods sweetened the deal for us as well (a client that's a delivery driver for Italian bakery gets bumped to the top of the list quick!)

The spongy deckboards indicated some serious rot, and boy did we find it in time! The timbers below needed some TLC and a new deck that wouldn't trap moisture. It was a good chance to bust out the screw jacks and excavate; both exterior posts needed scarf joints patched in as well as the eave and gable girt plates.

Local metal-magician Joel fabricated a brace to strengthen one of the girt patches (see slide 9 for Joel in action). We even pointed some of the stone work, which was a fun detour from the norm :P

The second hand ipe decking was the score of the century, and we must admit the look is stunning alongside the rough Hemlock, stone and metal. What do you think of this before & after?

Oh, where does the time go! 🍁🌲✨💚

Though it's been years, it seems like just yesterday we would hear the Suburu roll up practically inside the shop for our daily visit from Mitch & Penny. Mitch was a major part of the timber framer contingent at Bickford Lumber, and he & Penny had their hands in so many other homestead activities. The duo were great mentors to so many in our community, and they are greatly missed. Not to mention the prolific portfolio of art Mitch created in his lifetime! (The 1st photo is his feature in the coffee table book Maine 24/7)

MHTF was offered a special opportunity last month to join builder Isaac & his son over at the Mitchell Farm in Bowdoin for some R&R. We helped refresh the homestead, patching rot & siding the house & ell for a fresh paint job. We even got to crawl under the ell to shore up a saggy sill.

It was pretty magical to spend the waning autumn here on the West Burrough Road, surrounded by turkey, eagle, and deer. For those who haven't seen this glorious place, the rolling fields eventually give sight to a dense cluster of 12/12 roofs off in the distance, flanked by stout maples.

Mitch & Penny's spirits are very much alive and well here at the farmstead. For those who knew this hardworking horse farming / logging / sugaring team, it is easy to remember them and chuckle, for it's likely a good Mitch story comes to mind.

We are feeling grateful for the chance to pay our respects to these wonderful people and their family who will continue to enjoy the legacy that is Mitchell Farm.

Join us in wishing our best bud Ken Voorhees a happy birthday!!

If you have been blessed to know Ken like we have, then you'll agree that he is the most caring, warm and wonderful person (with an edge of mischief)... He's been a huge mentor for our building community, with decades of experience in not only timber framing but all phases of construction. A true legend!!

He is 70 years young today- and shows no sign of slowing down! And boy, does this guy love frogs! 🐸❤️🐸

Let's show Kendog some ❤️❤️❤️
