Rustic Canyon Viewing Garden

Located in Santa Monica’s coveted Rustic Canyon enclave, the main objective of this project was to double the home’s footprint, through the design of a series of fully functioning outdoor spaces that include a proper dining room, living room, viewing den, meditative garden, and outdoor shower.

We turned a steep slope (often thought to be unusable) between the upper and lower gardens to our advantage, by creating a rich experiential journey along a stairway that features an unfolding series of lovely viewpoints along the path, as well as a beautiful visual when viewed from windows looking down to the slope from the second floor of the house.

In keeping with a philosophy and aesthetic signature that we carry through many of our projects, this project is a celebration of native California plants. As you ascend from the upper deck to the lower garden, you pass through a lively mix of low water plantings that are a magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies.

We are sensitive to site appropriate design and are highly knowledgeable about sustainable landscape practices including drought tolerant planting, low water-use irrigation, low impact development and responsible paving approaches, water reclamation methods and systems, organic gardening and green roof design. We have designed landscapes in cities across California that have stringent standards for drought tolerant design.

Bel Air Secret Garden
The property occupies over an acre in Bel Air. The overall garden was in disrepair when we started and had virtually no hardscape for circulation. The client wanted to do a complete garden remodel and to add new hardscape to better link the house with the pool and guest house at one side of the garden. She also wanted to make the large, secluded natural bowl at the other side of the house an appealing destination without disturbing the visual appeal of the its grassy expanse and wooded slopes.

New England garden in California

A strong axial relationship across the Back Garden between the swimming pool and fountain is supported by the grid of Quercus ilex at a cross axis. As in the front garden, layered linear planting of Boxwood and Lavender and a tapestry of textural greens help to blur the boundaries and create a feeling of verdant seclusion. Sculptural, flowering Crape Myrtles enliven the pool seating area in summer.

New England garden in California

The owners of this home, longtime clients, have shared our love of lush New England gardens and the use of the stunning regional granite in the landscapes, particularly in the charming dry stack stone walls that abound in old farming communities there. When it came time to update their garden in conjunction with a major home remodel, BRLA sought to create a garden for them that reflects a New England sensibility and at the same time, complements the modern lines of the home.

For our Arcadia project, we reimagined the space beneath a stand of beautiful heritage native Oaks that have stood long before the neighborhood was built. By removing the water-hungry lawn, we created a thriving understory of native Oak woodland plants that supports the trees while conserving water and celebrating the site’s natural history.
