Another argument for the hiring of skilled, hands on gardeners as opposed to mow and blow guys. This is a business, ecological, health, and quality control issue. Forcing the market to become a skilled market is in everyone's best interest.

This broke my heart a little this morning. :( If this is truly the cause of this catastrophe affecting our bees, what could possibly be the solution? Ugh.

It seems like the plot of a particularly far-fetched horror film. But some scientists suggest that our love of the mobile phone could cause massive food shortages, as the world's harvests fail.

Personally, I like to catch my big, fat garden snails and feed them to Baroness Stinky Chompy von Burkenstein. She likes to peel them before she eats them. Turtles and tortoises are really great pets to have if you have a garden.

While on the subject of pest control, ithis time of year is when it's most needed. I would go mad if I didn't use this product on my evil, unstoppable argentine ants. Anyone living in Southern California is familiar with this horrendous force of nature, the invading argentine ant. This will not stop them (nothing will, yikes!) but it is the only method I've ever found useful in controlling them, if used diligently.

I have come across a couple of new gardeners this year who have resisted my directions to eradicate their snail populations because "snails are cute". This is not cute!! I highly suggest Sluggo. If you are adverse to using any sort of bait, as I am because my tortoise grazes in my garden, do what I do. Hunt! A ziplock bag with an inch of salt and a flashlight. (Or headlamp if you don't mind looking silly) Toss them in, seal the bag, and toss. Snails are in no way beneficial, and will grow in numbers rapidly, decimating all of your hard work.

I'm not a fan of Creedo Action, because every time I sign any of their petitions, I get spam mail for any other causes they may be champions of, and I find that really intrusive and presumptuous. However, this is important information regarding the effect of pesticides on our honeybee population, and a quick read about a very pressing problem that needs our attention.

Honey bees have been dying at alarming rates in the last few years. Recently leaked evidence shows that the E.P.A. ignored critical information when approving a chemical linked to the bee die-off. Sign the petition telling the E.P.A. to ban clothianidin today.
