I'm a homeowner in Ontario, Canada, currently doing the electrical rough-in for a home renovation. I'm trying to make sure everything complies with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) before my ESA inspection.

I understand that Romex (NMD90) needs to be kept at least 1¼ inches from the edge of a stud to protect it from drywall screws and nails.

Here's where I'm confused.

I'm using standard 2×4 studs with plastic electrical boxes mounted to them. The cable entry points on the boxes are closer to the edge of the stud than 1¼ inches.

Even if I secure my Romex in the centre of the stud, the cable naturally has to bend toward the front or back of the stud to enter the box.

Does the 1¼-inch clearance rule still apply to the short section of Romex immediately before it enters an electrical box?

I trusted the word of my 3rd year apprentice, had him make the DC up and the box coming out of the wall. Asked him if he check it for voltage said it’s all good to go. Got called back because HVAC said it wasn’t working. Sure enough smh. He’s my very first as a new journeyman, lesson learned.

These were recently installed, maybe 8 months ago. We plugged in a clothing iron on a DIFFERENT outlet (same circuit), and this outlet started to smell of melted plastic and some smoke. I shut off power and removed this one by cutting (the levers wouldn’t open, some damage).

Any ideas?

3/4 into my apprenticeship I’ve been running conduit for about 7-8 months and i enjoy it so far. Learning new techniques and making sure my work looks good enough even if it’ll never be seen. lmk your thoughts. Is there anything i can improve on ?

How long and how many people would you expect to do this? The first picture is the state of the pad Monday morning with inspection scheduled for the next day. I was suppose to have 2 guys with me but 1 called out and my super decided not to pull anyone else to help me. We ended up getting lucky and had a late inspection the next day so I got 6 hours with 3 guys the next day. Now my super is giving me s**t saying I didn’t run the job well because I had to run out and get material in the middle of the day because my original plan changed. (The usable part of the pad is only 7x7) Ive been doing service the last couple years so maybe I’m out of touch but I feel like this should have been at least 3 days worth of work?

I don’t even have words with how much wall is exposed, I almost want to say it was on purpose… but I can’t prove it.

For anyone wondering, it was a Diablo holesaw that did this gem (oh, and a god damn plumber!)
