The home is a landmarked Tudor Revival in the hills of Glendale, CA. The backyard was an open palette, and the clients requested a pool for their children. Originally, the yard sloped to one side and created a swampy area. We brought the yard up to grade to create a larger, single level yard. We also took care to preserve their massive cedar tree by building a retaining wall with a planting bed. In order to break up all the brick used for these walls, we added golden granite boulders. Custom iron gates were added to secure the pool area. The east and west walls were capped with custom built woven wood panels for extra privacy. Since the project was being planted during this extreme drought, we opted for many Australian natives rather than the typical CA drought tolerant plants. Lighting was also added for security and to highlight the new landscape.

These homeowners were building a new guest house and wanted to create a cohesive outdoor space connecting the two buildings. We remodeled the existing pool by replacing the tile, installing a glass mosaic, new coping and a new pool deck of large gray volcanic stone. The small concrete patio was replaced with a large brick patio and walkways. We added a herringbone inset pattern to the patio for added interest. The entire yard is artificial grass for low maintenance and the French planter boxes were built on site. We also added lighting in the trees and perimeter shrubs.

The client’s back yard was an open slate. The yard sloped slightly toward the driveway and the only access to the yard was from a door on the side of the house. They wanted an additional yard entrance, new pool and spa, a firepit and a dining patio. First, we brought the yard up toward the house and created a patio dining area. We also installed 2 sets of French doors at the back of the house for easier access to the pool.

A BBQ area and separate fire pit area was also added to the space for further entertainment. In addition, we manipulated the grade of the yard to create a bench within the pool. New doors were added to the garage so match the ones installed in the house. New lights, trees and other plants were installed to add to the overall atmosphere of the yard.

The family of this home wanted to create an entertainment area that gave a nod to their Indian heritage and complimented the existing elements of their home. We used Arto pre-cast concrete pavers in three custom colors and laid them in an Ashlar pattern to create this beautifully welcoming space.

The island was inset with an wood-carved Indian wall hanging and houses the barbecue and bar. We reflected the architecture of the house in the new vaulted pergola and also added awnings and a chandelier to bring the entire space together. The remaining half of the backyard is open and lushly landscaped with a fire pit as the anchor of the design.

This home had an existing kidney shaped pool that was too large for the space and in need of repair. The client wanted a smaller pool so there would be more room to entertain. We developed a design to include a loggia off the house which steps down into 3 distinct entertaining areas: a spa, fire pit, and BBQ island. The client and I designed a custom stainless steel spa with Diamond Spas in Denver. This element was the new focal point for the yard. After old pool was demolished, a vault was built to house the spa. The sides of the vault were clad in travertine marble. The spa was set partially above grade so the perimeter acts as a bench. The coping matches the sides and the end cap of the spa which holds the equipment is encased in Ipe. The fire pit was created using a large concrete bowl, a gas line was run to it and it was finished with tempered glass. Custom Arto pavers were cast for the walkway and the dining patio. Artificial grass was used as a low maintenance solution. Additional plantings and lighting surround the yard for privacy. At the far end of the yard, a BBQ island was built to house the Kalamazoo grill and Big Green Egg Smoker.
