Proper attic ventilation starts with the right calculations.

A balanced system needs both intake to bring fresh air in and exhaust to let warm, moist air escape. Together, they help reduce excess heat and moisture buildup that can damage your roofing system.

Here’s the breakdown for a 2,000-square-foot attic using the 1:300 method shown in this video:

▪️ 2,000 ÷ 300 × 144 = 960 square inches of total net free ventilation area.
▪️ Split that evenly: 480 square inches for intake and 480 for exhaust.

“Net free area” means the actual open space air can pass through—not simply the outside dimensions of a vent. Getting those numbers and vent placement right helps the system work as intended.

Wondering whether your attic has the ventilation it needs? Send Rain Roofing a message. 📩

It’s a lot hotter on a roof than it is on the ground.

When the outside temperature is already high, the surface of a roof can become extremely hot, especially under direct sunlight. That means roofers aren’t just working hard — they’re working in some seriously demanding conditions.

That’s why we make taking care of our crew a priority.

From making sure the team stays hydrated to taking necessary breaks and paying attention to the heat, the goal is simple: **get the job done right without sacrificing the safety of the people doing it.

A great roofing company doesn’t just take care of the roof — **it takes care of the crew on it too.

🏠 Don’t judge a new roof the second it’s installed.

Fresh shingles may not immediately lay perfectly flat because they’ve been stacked and compressed in their packaging. Once they’re installed, they need a little time, sunlight, and heat to relax, seal, and settle into place.

Over the next several days — sometimes up to a couple of weeks — the shingles will begin laying flatter and the roof will take on its finished appearance. ☀️

So if your brand-new roof looks a little uneven at first, give it time to settle before worrying.

What’s the difference between a Class 4 shingle and a regular shingle? 🏠

A Class 4 shingle is an impact-resistant roofing shingle designed to handle significantly more punishment from things like **hail, flying debris, and severe weather** than a standard asphalt shingle.

Class 4 is the highest impact-resistance rating commonly given to roofing shingles. These shingles are specifically engineered and tested to withstand harder impacts without cracking, splitting, or suffering the same level of damage a traditional shingle may experience.

So why choose Class 4?

✅ Greater resistance to hail and impact damage
✅ More protection during severe storms
✅ Reduced chance of premature roof damage
✅ Potentially fewer repairs after major weather events
✅ May qualify for insurance discounts depending on your provider
✅ Added peace of mind when the next storm rolls through

A regular shingle can still provide great protection for your home, but when you live in an area where **hail and severe storms are a real concern**, upgrading to a Class 4 roofing system can give your home an additional layer of defense.

Your roof is your home’s first line of protection — make sure it’s built to take a hit. 💪🏠

Contact Rain Roofing to learn whether a Class 4 roofing system is right for your home.

A Class 4 roof is more than just the shingles — the entire system matters.

When building a true Class 4 impact-resistant roofing system, your main shingles need the proper impact rating, but your hips and ridges matter too. A common practice is using standard 3-tab shingles as ridge caps, but those can become a weak point when the rest of the roof is designed for stronger hail and impact protection.

That’s why choosing the right ridge product is so important. ImpactRidge is designed to pair with impact-resistant shingles such as Owens Corning Duration STORM to help complete a Class 4 system, while options like DecoRidge provide an upgraded, dimensional finish along the hips and ridges.

On this property, Rain Roofing is installing Class 4 ImpactRidge® to match the Duration STORM shingles — making sure protection doesn’t stop at the main roof surface.

Your roof is a system. Make sure every component is built with a purpose.
