Unfortunately we will not be able to attend the farmers market tomorrow due to a scheduling conflict. Flowers, tomatoes, herbs, and peppers (bell, banana, jalapeno, and pablano) are available by request. The garden is bursting with peppers of every color.

Plant Spotlight - Egyptian Walking Onions

A favorite of mine, walking onions are a perennial here in Nebraska and every part of the plant is safe to eat. Though the bulbs are smaller than a standard onion what they lack in size they make up for in quantity. Each bulb multiplies underground to form clumps and sends up a stalk with top sets called bulbils. These top sets fall over and start a new plant which is how they "walk" across the garden. Often each plant will produce two or three clumps of bulbils at a time. Between division and top sets, one full size bulb can easily produce another 15+ plants.

I like to remove and separate the bulbils so they can be planted farther apart resulting in bigger bulbs the next year. Young leaves make excellent green onions, bulbs can be chopped like regular onions, and bulbils are fun to pickle or add whole to roasts. I started with only 2 plants each the size of a blade of grass. Now I have several handfuls of bulbils ready to be planted and can produce enough onions for our family.
