Getting ready for next week!

It may be finally summer next week, but I’m heading out to do some boiler work Monday.

A couple of months ago I found a heating system for a multi unit apartment building had water in it that was eating the pipes from the inside out.

First thing to deal with in that situation is water chemistry. I know, nerdy stuff… but it matters a lot when you’re trying to protect a $7000+ piece of equipment that you want to last a couple of decades.

These things in the green boxes are basically filters for closed loop heating systems. They also have magnets that trap any ferrous material that may be in the water. Metals in the water can cause reduced flow, take out pumps, and cause damage from poor heat transfer. This is the second step in dealing with water quality issues. Most boiler manufacturers now require the use of a “filter” like this now to keep your high efficiency, expensive, technical equipment running at the right temperatures.

Call me, the nerd, for more information on nerdy things like water quality in your heating systems!

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a case study that highlights why working with a self-employed technician might be a better fit for you than using a large service provider.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been helping a local bar and grill that’s been through some significant changes. They’re working hard to get things back on track, and I’ve been assisting them one refrigeration issue at a time.

I know the photo isn’t the best quality, but it was taken while I was on top of their ice machine! 😅

The most important thing to notice is the brown color of the foaming cleaner. The coil that removes heat from the water to make ice was heavily clogged with grease and dirt.

They had been using another “bigger” service company for scheduled maintenance on their ice machine. It wasn’t making ice well on the morning of Cinco De Mayo, and it was going to be almost 80 degrees out, with a large outdoor bar area. Yikes!

This machine was “cleaned” within 1-2 months ago. I’m concerned that someone might have missed something, and I’m really sorry for my new clients. I’m not accusing the previous providers of intentionally doing something wrong. I actually interviewed with that company a while back, and they were in desperate need of skilled technicians. The issue is that sometimes these larger companies are so overwhelmed with their overhead and so on that they will send younger workers to handle tasks like this, and the result is that clients don’t receive the service they need.

Was it even a good refrigeration service call unless you feel like you needed a shower after? 🧼

I can’t go anywhere without my black hat, and you would think I would be particular about the appearance of my trademark style choice.

Commercial refrigeration can be very ~messy~… a new client I visited today reminded me of this.

Many a night I’ve come home smelling of things. The amount of grease my skin has absorbed, I should look twenty years younger. It’s not for everyone.

But, I’m here for it. If you or someone you know needs a person willing to get down in the dirt, please reach out!!!

What’s in a name? Why did I choose DNA as my name?

Well, there’s a story here. My why is about why. Why do things break? Why does refrigerant do what it does? Why does the world work the way it does?

As a kid, I was fascinated by and excelled in sciences. I was inspired by movies like Jurassic Park, Apollo 13, or anything that had technology/engineering involved. I looked up to people that were successful in the racing, aviation, etc world that were successful because they were innovative.

In summary, I was a huge nerd 🤓

I still am a huge nerd, literally 😅

Getting into the HVAC and refrigeration trade at 19 I quickly noticed that what we are doing is really a lot of physical science! I was immediately hooked.

When it came time that I made the choice to go out on my own, I had to reflect that kid who turned into a young man that was still a huge nerd. I picked a name that was an homage to all of those things that enthralled for all my life, and was also so very me.

Thanks for coming to my Ted talk, and I hope we can connect and I can show you how having a guy with a why is good for you.
