Today, the Menards team is working to repair a very serious structural error. In this scenario, the customer previously desired to open up their living room and kitchen area by removing a dividing wall. Unbeknownst to them, the wall was a main load bearing wall, and the workers they hired not only removed the wall, but also cut a hole in a main supporting beam and did not replace the necessary support that the structure requires! Thankfully, while working on another project, Menards Construction owner, James Menard, discovered this extremely concerning issue and hired an engineer to confirm the error and determine a solution. Consequently, the team is currently working to add a 1000lb steel beam to the already finished home to ensure that the structure is secure, properly supported, and safe from collapse in the future!
Are you interested in removing a wall in your home, but not sure if it is load bearing and safe to remove? Keep these steps in mind to ensure the job is done properly and safely!
1. Hire a qualified contractor to assess the project or issue.
2. Communicate clearly your desires and concerns.
3. Consult a qualified engineer. Often, if your contractor is qualified to do the job, they will involve an engineer to assist in the assessment of your project to ensure that they complete the job according to proper codes.
4. After receiving positive feedback that your wall may be removed safely, proceed with peace of mind that your custom project will enhance the beauty of your home and not compromise it's structure and your safety.
