Some projects change a company.
The Westfield Country Club project was one of those projects for Bachtel Excavating.
When we started this job in October of 2024, we knew it would be our largest contract to date at nearly $2.4 million. We also knew it would challenge our people, our processes, and our company in ways we had never experienced before.
What I didn’t realize at the time was how much growth would come from it.
Over the last 20 months, our team learned how to manage larger crews, coordinate more equipment, improve communication, document our work better, and execute a project at a level we had never reached before. The project made us a better company.
One person who really represents that growth is Jake.
Jake started with Bachtel Excavating 10 years ago cleaning the shop. From there he became a laborer, a pipe layer, an equipment operator, and eventually a foreman.
When this project started, Jake was managing crews of 3 or 4 people. During the course of this job, he grew into leading up to 15 field employees and coordinating another 10 dump trucks on site. He participated in weekly project meetings, documented progress, helped manage schedules, and developed project management skills that will benefit him for the rest of his career.
Watching Jake grow into the leader he is today has been one of the most rewarding parts of this project.
His story mirrors the story of our company. We both started small, worked hard, kept learning, and took on challenges that pushed us outside our comfort zones.
I couldn’t be more proud of what our team accomplished at Westfield Country Club and the people who made it happen.
A special thank you to Fred Olivieri Construction Company for trusting us with this opportunity. Your confidence in our team allowed us to take on a project that helped elevate our company and develop the next generation of leaders within Bachtel Excavating.
The project is complete, but the lessons learned and growth that came from it will stay with us for years to come.
