More painting trip prep. Now I’m trying out a new travel palette for watercolors and gouache. I’m liking it! One can never have too many travel palettes (I do. It’s fine🙈).

I’m testing out various papers and palettes for an upcoming painting trip by doing master studies of Sorolla and Whistler. Headed to a seaside location 🙌🏼 👀

I finally made it to a paint out with McKinney Plein Air Society yesterday. I need to do it more often because I learn so much from the challenge. And what a lovely group of people.

Today was meh. I worked in my studio for the first time in weeks and felt like it might as well have been my first time painting ever. Nothing I did was working and most every attempt was scrapped or wiped clean. Sharing this because I want to normalize the “off days”. I think one of the best lessons I’ve learned as an artist is that sometimes we make crap. However, the most precious commodity - our time - is never wasted when we are engaging in creation. I heard once that we should think of our artistic failures not as trash but as compost, an essential nourishment to the soil from which all that we will create blooms forth. And so we try again tomorrow.

Happy Grazing Cows, 18x32 oil on panel.

This is a great example of how I sometimes composite several reference photos into one painting. In this case, from a hike with our friends in California in the lush green hills behind their house. See if you can recognize from these photos what went into the finished painted piece.
