We love this design because it gives the staircase an updated look while staying true to the home’s original railing layout. The new balusters and posts tie in beautifully with the existing trim and architecture, making the finished staircase feel like it was always meant to be there.

Now it’s ready for stain!

A little behind-the-scenes look at what can be hiding underneath carpeted stairs.

We were brought into this project by the flooring contractor, who is refinishing the hardwood floors throughout the home. The goal is for the stairs and floors to be refinished together so the wood species, stain, and overall appearance are as uniform as possible.

Once we got into the existing staircase, we found that the original builder had used a mix of materials. The bottom six steps were solid red oak treads, while the upper nine were actually 2x12 pine framing lumber that had been covered with carpet. Meanwhile, the hardwood flooring throughout the home is white oak.

Yesterday, we removed the mismatched stair materials and upgraded the staircase with new unfinished white oak treads and painted risers, giving the flooring contractor a consistent white oak surface to finish along with the rest of the home.

Today we move on to the railing system.

The first photo shows where we started. The second shows the new white oak staircase ready for finishing and the next phase of the rail work.

Sometimes a stair renovation is less about changing the look and more about correcting what was underneath it in the first place.

A little extra work on this one while we wait on the new railing to come in.

This project is getting a full revamp: new treads, risers, posts, balusters and rails. The homeowners have actually had TWO instances where someone fell over the existing railing!!!! 😵 We didn’t want to leave things as-is while we wait on the new parts.

We installed temporary safety rails around the balcony perimeter to keep everything secure during the ordering process.

Once everything comes in, the existing railing will be replaced with a new code-compliant system and the whole staircase will get a fresh start.

Sometimes the temporary stuff is just as important as the finished product.
