This homeowner wanted to really update her kitchen. The cabinets had been painted two or three times, and the most recent coat left ropey brush lines. The real issue, though, was the sink. It was leaking underneath, looked worn, and she wanted something different—even though that meant a much-loved granite countertop had to go. Bids were made for replacing the doors and drawer fronts, adding new uppers over the existing ones, redoing the crown with the paint-encrusted, much-disliked rope trim, and adding a new, more decorative vent hood. The price was high, but about what you often hear for this kind of project.

This homeowner wanted to really update her kitchen. It had been far to long waiting to be addressed.

Home ReNewal Cabinet Painting whittled a lot of this price down by saving the original cabinets. We sanded all surfaces thoroughly until smooth, then spray-painted them with a professional cabinet paint by Sherwin Williams, along with a special paint by Benjamin Moore on the island. New soft-close hinges were installed. The black vent hood was refinished in the same custom color as the rest of the cabinets, and the island received a new coordinating color. We also added new, more adjustable hidden soft-close hinges, and new pulls were ordered. We came in first and completed the painting before the other contractors installed the new quartz countertops, matching quartz backsplash, and sink. We finished the doors and drawers off-site and came back to apply the final coats on everything before the others fabricated and installed the tops. After a successful installation, we returned to double-check the final look. Our part helped lower the overall cost for a new retiree who wanted a much nicer kitchen.

These were two solutions for amber-aged cabinets. One was a lot more expensive than the other. One just wanted to go back to the original natural look, the other said I need a color.

An old customer, from a few years back, had me darken their cabinets to Espresso, which I'm told is still holding up good. This last week, on their recently purchased new home, they liked the existing kitchen finish. (I might have done it years ago, but because the backyard has so many new fancy additions if I did do that, I'm not sure. ) It is my style in those days, and the numbers only found on the old stuff look a lot like my writing. We took off one drawer front and figured out the color match to both the coat, the glaze and the clear.

It appears that the island was added recently, since it did not match the off-white cabinets, which have a subtle glaze line. There were no numbers in the hidden hinge cup holes, and it appeared that the staining was done on site, not removing the doors. The stain was not to the liking of the new buyer. It was dark and poorly executed with brushstrokes maybe intentionally, and dented all over in a type of distressed finish few people want today. It definitely was not done by me.

So, we filled in the dents as much as possible. I put up a plastic barrier to keep the sanding dust and any fine over-spray inside the plastic. A big vacuumed air mover was placed on the top of the island with a big bag to catch the fine dust from spraying. That stuff generally is dry by the time it hits the floor, our long hose was not needed in this case. Check it out. It looks like a perfect match to everybody.

These cabinets were yellowing a bit, and the customer wanted to change the colors after owning them for 14 years. He chose Sherwin Williams Pure White for the main kitchen cabinets, and Sherwin Williams Urban Bronze for the island.

If you look at the bottom right photo, you can see the old cabinet finish. I wish I had taken a close up, it is just an overdone glazed job that does not go well with the new owners. They will send me a photo later of the new tile. The nicest thing about the color choices which are SW Urban Putty customized, and SW Porpoise is that they really bring out the colors in the granite which was there.
