Can we please retire these from Memphis flowerbeds?

We see these black accordion-style downspout extenders at houses all over the Mid-South—usually tucked behind shrubs or laid across fresh mulch.

They may stop the downspout from washing out one tiny spot, but when the end is still sitting inside the same flowerbed, you haven’t solved the drainage problem. You’ve moved hundreds of gallons of roof water about four feet.

They also get kinked, crushed, buried in mulch and filled with debris. Then the water either backs up or pours out exactly where the pipe ends—still right beside the house.

A proper downspout system uses solid pipe with the correct slope to carry roof runoff to a suitable discharge point.

Getting the water out of sight isn’t the same as getting it away from the house.

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to fix your drainage problem—this is it.

Standing water is usually a symptom of a larger issue: improper grading, undersized drainage, too few collection points or no reliable place for the water to discharge.

A drainage system only works when it can collect, carry and discharge the water properly. Miss one of those three, and the problem returns with the next heavy rain.

At Drainage Solutions, we evaluate the entire property and design a system around its actual elevations and runoff—not a one-size-fits-all fix.

A drainage system is only as effective as the route it uses to discharge the water.

This property already had an extensive underground drainage network, but portions of the system needed to be reconfigured to provide more efficient flow and additional discharge capacity.

Our work includes:

• Connecting the existing 8-inch discharge line into the property’s 12-inch stormwater system
• Rerouting the existing 12-inch patio drainage line to a separate municipal storm sewer
• Professionally core-drilling the municipal connection for a permanent, watertight discharge
• Adding drainage near the patio door
• Raising and extending the existing berm to help contain and direct surface runoff
• Removing three unnecessary catch basins and capping the abandoned line

Once the underground work and grading are complete, removed concrete and brick will be replaced, disturbed areas will receive new Zoysia sod, and the property will be left with a clean, finished appearance.

Drainage problems aren’t always caused by the absence of drains. Sometimes the existing system simply isn’t moving the water along the most effective path. That’s why every project begins with a detailed evaluation of the entire property—not a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

Our drainage evaluations are free—but they are far from “just a free estimate.”

We walk the property with you, listen to every concern and discuss what you’ve been experiencing. Together, we look at where the water is coming from, how it moves and where it can safely be redirected.

Then we put together a detailed plan in writing explaining exactly how we propose solving the problem. You’ll know what we recommend, why we recommend it and what the project will include before any work begins.

Some companies charge just to visit your property. We believe you should have the opportunity to understand the problem and feel confident in the solution before making that investment.

Because we’re a small company, the person who performs your evaluation is also the person who will be on-site leading your project from start to finish. We subcontract ZERO drainage work, and our installations are backed by a warranty.

With Drainage Solutions LLC, your free evaluation includes:

• A complete property walk-through
• Time to discuss your concerns together
• An experienced assessment of the water problem
• A detailed, property-specific plan in writing
• Direct access to the person leading your installation
• An in-house crew with zero subcontracted drainage work
• A warranty backing the completed project

The evaluation is free. The expertise, planning and accountability behind it are incredibly valuable.

Your drainage problem didn’t disappear. The rain did.

With temperatures in the 90s, the clay soil around Memphis and North Mississippi dries hard and compact. When the next heavy storm arrives, water can’t soak into that ground fast enough—so it moves across the surface instead.

That’s when you see:

• Water rushing toward the house
• Low areas filling within minutes
• Mulch and topsoil washing away
• Downspouts overwhelming the yard
• Water entering garages and crawlspaces
• New erosion appearing after a single storm

The hotter and harder the ground becomes, the more runoff one intense downpour can create.

Dry weather hides drainage problems. Heavy rain exposes them.

The next time it rains, watch where the water actually goes. Check your downspouts, foundation, low areas and anywhere runoff begins cutting through the yard. Take photos or a short video while it’s happening—a few minutes during a storm can reveal what weeks of dry weather hide.

This job was a beast.

After their pool installation, these homeowners were left with major grading and drainage problems that eventually caused water to enter their home. We were hired to correct the work and give them a permanent solution—not another temporary fix.

We installed three 24” cast-iron storm drains at the top of the hill, each with its own 8” HDPE discharge line running underground to the ditch at the front of the property.

The project also included:

• Hidden French drains
• Downspout and channel-drain tie-ins
• A new 5” channel drain
• Concrete headwalls and erosion-control pads
• Complete regrading to create a flatter, more usable yard
• A new Allan Block retaining wall
• Repairs and rebuilding on the existing retaining walls
• Concrete removal and replacement
• New Bermuda sod
• Smart lighting throughout the backyard

Most of the drainage system is now hidden underground or behind the retaining wall—but it’s built to handle a massive amount of water before it ever reaches the home.

Three weeks of work through scorching heat, and we couldn’t be prouder of the finished result.

Swipe through to see the project during the day, the walls lit up at night and the five-star review that made it all worth it.

Thank you, Aydrien, for trusting Dylan, Luis and the Drainage Solutions crew to turn an eight-month nightmare into a backyard your family can finally enjoy.

If 2025 was the year of French drains, 2026 has been the year of retaining walls.

Homeowners are tired of wasting half their backyard because it’s too steep to use.

A properly engineered retaining wall doesn’t just look good—it creates usable land, solves erosion issues, manages elevation changes, and can dramatically increase your property’s functionality and curb appeal.

This backyard went from an unusable slope to a space the homeowner can actually enjoy.

We don’t build decorative walls just to stack blocks. We build retaining walls that are designed to last, drain correctly, and solve the problem that caused the wall to be needed in the first place.

If you’ve been looking at that hill in your backyard thinking, “There’s got to be a better way,” there probably is.

☀️ Memphis Heat Today… But Your Next Drainage Problem Is Already Starting.

This extreme heat is baking the ground rock hard.

The next time we get a heavy rain, don’t be surprised if you notice:
✔️ Water sitting in your yard longer than usual
✔️ Water running toward your foundation
✔️ Grass staying muddy for days
✔️ Standing water attracting mosquitoes

That’s because our clay soil dries out, then struggles to absorb heavy rainfall when storms return.

If you’ve been putting off fixing a drainage issue, now is actually one of the best times to get it taken care of—before the next round of rain exposes the problem again.
