It takes time… but it’s worth it.

Installing the last rows of a 2 1/4” red oak floor!

Finishing up before the long weekend 😎

The last guys forgot something…

Whoever installed this floor created a custom piece to finish off the install by securing three rows of boards together and dropping it in.

The problem? They neglected to secure the custom piece to the subfloor! It’s not attached at all and lifts right up with just a little bit of upwards force.

One thing I can say about the people who installed this floor; I’m sure they got it done fast!

Wrapping up the week with a coat of .us ClearSeal on refinished maple!

Here’s a follow up to last week’s post that shows the floor before the tear out. As you can see, the entire floor flexes and bows when it gets walked on.

Of course not too long after this, we’d find the cause of the problem which ended up being that the boards weren’t even nailed into the subfloor.

In case you’re wondering, the floor isn’t supposed to come up that easily.

We were called in to tear up and replace a floor after the homeowners complained of the wood buckling, gapping, and moving around as they walked on it.

As we began the tear out, we discovered that most of the floor wasn’t even nailed in! And the boards that were “nailed” were using small staples that didn’t even pe*****te into the subfloor.

Unlike many trades such as electrical, plumbing, and HVAC, you don’t need any license or training to be a professional flooring installer. Anyone can decided to start a flooring business tomorrow.

This unfortunately often leads to many companies cutting corners and costs at the expense of the homeowner. The floor may look presentable on day one, but many issues such as this don’t show up until after the installers are paid and gone.

Always do your research when hiring a home service company. Especially ones where no license is required. What’s cheap and fast today, may turn out to be a disaster tomorrow.

Before ➡️ During ➡️ After

This floor had taken some serious water damage from a leaky dishwasher resulting in buckling and dark stains. After removing the old wood and installing new red oak flooring, it’s like it never happened!
