A little shellac comes in handy for pesky wood knots and bleed through.

Haint blue paint is traditionally used in the lowcountry regions of South Carolina and Georgia. The color was believed to confuse or repel spirits, as they would mistake it for the sky or water—two things they couldn’t cross. Painting doors, windows, and porch ceilings this color was a form of spiritual protection.

Proper preparation is a necessity when painting with deep rich colors. A grey primer is an excellent choice to ensure your deep red paint pops on the wall like you envisioned. The correct primer can also help reduce the number of total coats needed and can dictate the final shade of your top coat. Here is a picture from a current project.
