BEFORE FALL ARRIVES, WALK AROUND YOUR HOUSE AND LOOK UP!

Here’s an easy DIY home check that takes about 10 minutes and can help you catch problems before fall and winter weather make them worse.

Stand back from your house and take a good look at the roofline, gutters, fascia and exterior trim. Look for gutters that are sagging or pulling away, loose or damaged trim, rotting wood, missing or damaged shingles, and areas where water appears to be running down the house instead of away from it.

Then check around decks, porches and stairs for loose boards, railings that move when you push on them, and wood that feels soft or looks discolored.

You don’t need to climb onto the roof. In fact, we recommend you DON'T. Most problems can be spotted safely from the ground.

Finding a small problem now can often mean a relatively simple repair. Waiting until water, ice and snow get involved can turn it into a much bigger project.

DIY HOME IMPROVEMENT TIP: Give Your Deck a 10-Minute Checkup!

Your deck has probably gotten plenty of use this summer, and with fall and another Connecticut winter around the corner, now is a great time to give it a quick inspection. You don't need to be a contractor to spot some of the early warning signs that your deck may need a little attention.

Start with the obvious things. Walk the entire deck and look for loose, cracked, warped or deteriorating boards and nails or screws that are popping up. Give railings and stair handrails a gentle shake. They should feel solid, not loose or wobbly. Check stairs for movement and take a look underneath the deck if it's safely accessible. Pay particular attention to posts, beams, joists and the area where the deck attaches to the house.

Here's another simple trick for a wood deck: grab a screwdriver. If you see an area that looks suspicious, particularly wood that stays damp or appears discolored or deteriorated, gently probe it. Healthy wood should feel firm. If the screwdriver easily sinks into the wood or the area feels soft or spongy, you could be looking at decay that deserves a closer inspection.

And remember, an older-looking deck isn't necessarily an unsafe deck. Faded stain, discoloration and minor surface checking can simply mean it's time for some maintenance. Soft or rotting wood, loose railings, unstable stairs, significant movement or deteriorating structural components are a different story and should be addressed.

Catching a small problem today can prevent it from becoming a much largerand more expensive repair later!

DIY HOME IMPROVEMENT TIP: Check & Refresh the Caulk Around Your Home

Sometimes the least expensive home-maintenance projects can help prevent some VERY expensive repairs! One of the easiest things homeowners can do is periodically check the caulk around their home.

Caulk creates a seal that helps keep water and moisture from getting where they don't belong. Over time, however, caulk can dry out, shrink, crack, or pull away from the surface. Those little gaps may not look like much, but they can allow water to reach wood, drywall, framing, and other materials, potentially leading to rot, mold, mildew, and costly repairs.

Take a walk around your home and check the caulk around tubs, showers, sinks, kitchen countertops and backsplashes, windows, exterior trim, door frames, thresholds, and other areas where two different materials meet. If you see cracking, gaps, peeling, or caulk pulling away from the surface, it's probably time to replace it.

For most small projects, it's an easy DIY job. Remove the old caulk carefully with a caulk-removal tool or utility knife, thoroughly clean the area, and allow it to dry completely. Apply a fresh, continuous bead of the appropriate caulk, smooth it with a caulk-finishing tool or damp finger, and give it the recommended amount of time to cure.

One important tip: Make sure you're using the RIGHT caulk for the job! Bathrooms and other wet areas typically need a waterproof kitchen-and-bath product, while exterior windows, doors, and trim require a caulk specifically rated for exterior use and weather exposure.

A tube of caulk and a little bit of your time today could help prevent hundreds or even thousands of dollars in repairs later. Small effort. Big protection!

DIY HOME IMPROVEMENT TIP: Choosing the Right Paint Brush & Roller

Planning to freshen up a room with a new coat of paint? Before you get started, don't just grab the first brush and roller you see! Choosing the right tools can make a BIG difference in how smoothly the paint goes on and how professional the finished job looks.

For brushes, a 2" to 2½" angled sash brush is a great all-around choice for cutting in around ceilings, windows, doors, and trim. Synthetic nylon or polyester brushes work especially well with today's water-based latex and acrylic paints. For rollers, pay attention to the nap, which is the thickness of the roller cover. A 3/8" nap is a great choice for most smooth interior walls, while 1/2" nap works well on lightly textured surfaces. Heavily textured walls, brick, or masonry may need a thicker 3/4" nap to reach into all those uneven areas.

And here's one place you DON'T want to save a couple of dollars: buy decent-quality brushes and roller covers! Cheap brushes can shed bristles into your paint, and inexpensive rollers can leave lint, uneven coverage, and frustrating roller marks. A good brush can also be cleaned and reused for years. The right tools won't just make the finished room look better. They'll make the entire project easier from the first stroke to the last!
