If you have not checked the corners of your eaves, porch ceilings, and shed roofs lately, now is the moment.

Paper wasps start nest-building in late May across West Texas, and a nest that is the size of a quarter today can be the size of a tennis ball by Father's Day.

Two quick habits for the long weekend: walk the perimeter of your house with a flashlight in hand, and look up.

Any umbrella-shaped nest hanging from a stem is a wasp nest. Do not knock it down yourself.

The good news is that she delivers a much smaller dose, which is why most bites are treatable and rarely fatal.

The bad news is that she likes the exact places we hang out in May, which is garages, woodpiles, and the underside of patio furniture.

After a week of West Texas spring storms, fire ant mounds are popping up across Midland yards.

Fire ants rebuild their mound within 24 hours of rain, so a clean yard on Monday can have three new mounds by Saturday.

Two things to watch for this weekend: fresh powdery soil piles in sunny spots, and trails of reddish ants along sidewalk cracks. Do not stomp or flood a fire ant mound. That scatters the colony and spreads the problem across your yard.

It is called biofluorescence, and nobody knows exactly why they do it.

What we do know is that May and June are when scorpions become more active across West Texas, and a quick sweep of your backyard or garage with a UV flashlight can show you exactly where they are hiding before you step on one barefoot. Keep a UV flashlight near the back door, check the garage before you walk in at night, and call us the moment you see one glowing green.
