Studio Walker Architects, Inc. Architecture, Planning and Project Management My journey to architecture has been anything but conventional—and it’s shaped the way I see the world.

I was a music major in high school, followed by six years of military service—four years in the U.S. Navy and two years in the Marine Corps as a Special Forces trainer during the Vietnam War. After my service, I pursued my passion for the arts, earning a two-year degree in music as an opera singer. That creative foundation eventually led me to architecture. I earned my Bachelor of Architecture fro

m Washington State University, focusing on passive and active solar design and earth-sheltered architecture—sustainable principles that continue to guide my work. Over the years, I’ve designed homes, schools, hospitals, and corporate headquarters. Today, as Principal Architect at Studio Walker Architects, I bring together artistic expression, technical expertise, and thoughtful design to create spaces that endure, inspire, and serve the people who use them.

Thinking about a remodel or new home in the Puget Sound region or Lake Chelan area?

One of the biggest issues I see—no matter the county—is this:

Projects get delayed or denied because zoning rules and permit requirements weren’t factored in early.

Recently, I worked with a homeowner whose initial design wouldn’t have passed review. By adjusting it upfront, we avoided a costly redesign and kept the project moving.

Every county—King, Kitsap, Snohomish, Jefferson, Chelan/Douglas—has its own constraints, and those details matter more than most people expect.

If you’re in the early stages of planning, I’m happy to take a quick look at your idea and flag anything that could cause issues.

Send me a message with what you’re considering—I’ll give you straightforward feedback.

Here is some ongoing work we're doing in Woodway WA a complete two story interior and exterior renovation. If you'd like to learn more send me a message.

🌐 On AI and Architecture: A Personal Reflection

Lately, I've been reflecting on the rise of AI in our profession—and I’ll be honest, it’s stirring a mix of curiosity, concern, and wonder.

As a seasoned architect, I’ve spent decades honing a practice rooted in relationships, place, light, material, and story. But now, we're seeing tools that can generate floor plans in seconds, render buildings that never existed, and even simulate creative decisions. It’s impressive. And yes—it’s a little unsettling.

Is AI disruptive? Absolutely. It’s changing how drawings are made, how decisions are informed, and even how some clients view the value of design. But here’s what I know for sure:

Architecture is more than outputs.
It’s more than models, renderings, and code compliance. It’s about people. About listening, interpreting, guiding, and translating human need into built form.

AI may be able to simulate knowledge—but it doesn’t know how to care.
It doesn’t walk a site and sense the wind.
It doesn’t hear the stress in a client’s voice or notice how a family uses a kitchen.
It doesn’t wrestle with beauty, meaning, or responsibility.

These are the things that still matter. And always will.

I’m not here to reject AI. Used well, it can be a powerful tool—saving time, exploring options, even unlocking new forms of creativity. But it’s just that: a tool, not a replacement for the human touch.

So while we adapt, learn, and evolve, let’s not forget what makes architecture deeply human. That’s the part no machine can replicate—and the part I remain committed to, every day.

Some dreams never fade. As a boy, I sketched houses. As a man, I studied music, served my country, then found my way back to design. Architecture became my language—a way to shape not just structures, but the way we live with the land and each other. Sustainability isn’t just a principle; it’s a responsibility. This earth-sheltered concept for the Palouse is one more step toward that vision.

Nestled on the shores of Hood Canal, this seaside home captures the essence of coastal elegance. The striking central tower, home to a cozy library accessed by a ship's ladder, evokes the timeless charm of a lighthouse. Designed as a summer retreat for a Seattle family, the lower floor welcomes guests while the upper floor serves as a private sanctuary for the owners. A perfect blend of functionality and beauty, this home offers serene views and an inviting escape.

When your kitchen island is more of a statement piece than just a countertop. 🍽️✨
Here’s a sneak peek at a country cottage kitchen we designed where the island is not just functional—it reads like a piece of furniture! It’s got its own vibe, separate from the main cabinetry, just like your favorite accent chair or coffee table. 🪑💡

Because why shouldn’t your kitchen have personality? 😉

This little beauty is a modern butterfly roof design for a waterfront home in Lake Chelan, WA. It’s just a study model... no big deal. Just casually designing dream homes while figuring out what’s for dinner. 🍽️🖊️
