Not too many people post about the bad days. If you only see what’s on social media, you would think planting food plots is easy and nothing ever goes wrong.
I’m here to tell ya, that’s far from facts.
Today, I rolled into a clients property to check on some soybean and buckwheat fields that I fertilized a week ago. I figured by now, things should really be looking good. Mother Nature had other plans….
The slugs managed to practically wiped out the bean and buckwheat fields. An issue I didn’t think I would have to contend with on the food plot side of things. With the marginal conditions that the client had when he planted, the seed trench didn’t close like it should. This leaves a “highway and hide away” for the slugs to use and get out of the sun. The combination of these trenches and heavy thatch from cover crops and weeds let the slugs eat their way to virtually complete devastation.
When fields are this bad, you have no choice but to break out the tillage equipment and start over. So that’s what happened!
I try my hardest to use no-till practices, but they have a place. And I’m learning that PA mountain ground might not be that place…
Unfortunately for these fields, this story is to be continued….hopefully with a happier ending.
