Spokane has been on our hearts the past week.

We spent five wonderful years there. It's where we built lifelong friendships, where we welcomed our daughter into the world, and where we learned what it means to put down roots in a community. Even though we no longer live there, Spokane will always feel like home to us.

Watching the devastation from the fires has been heartbreaking. Our hearts are with every family who has lost a home, a neighborhood, or a place filled with memories.

As designers, we've learned that a home is never just a building. It's where birthdays are celebrated, traditions begin, children grow up, quiet mornings are shared, and ordinary moments become lifelong memories. That's why seeing so many families lose theirs is so deeply heartbreaking.

We know this is an overwhelming season for so many families. If you or someone you know is facing the difficult road of rebuilding and could use someone to answer questions, talk through the process, or connect with trusted professionals, please don't hesitate to reach out. We'd be honored to help however we're able.

Spokane has given our family so much, and we'll always be grateful for that.

We're praying for comfort for those grieving, wisdom for the many difficult decisions ahead, strength for the first responders, volunteers, and everyone working to help, and for this community as it begins the long road toward healing.

Every great home begins with understanding the site.

Before we think about floor plans, we’re asking questions like: Where are the best views? How does the sun move across the property? Where do you want to feel connected to the outdoors? And where do you want privacy?

Those answers shape everything that follows.

When we chose the name Artifact, it wasn’t because we wanted something that sounded architectural.

We chose it because we believe the best homes become more than buildings.

Over time, they become the backdrop for family dinners, quiet mornings, holiday traditions, and countless everyday moments that shape our lives.

Our role is to thoughtfully design the architecture.

One of our favorite spaces in this home is the primary shower.

The room is cantilevered out over the forest, making it feel like you’re standing among the trees while still remaining completely private. Through the side windows, you can even catch glimpses of the Sound.

Then you notice the floor.

The removable wood grate lifts away to reveal a concealed soaking tub below. Years before starting Artifact, Robert helped build this home, including crafting the custom wood grate that made the whole idea possible.

Some building materials are chosen because they’re popular.

Others have earned their place over centuries.

That’s one of the reasons we’re drawn to Nakamoto Forestry.

Their authentic yakisugi (commonly called shou sugi ban in North America) is crafted using a traditional Japanese process that preserves cedar through controlled charring. The result is a remarkably durable material that develops a rich patina and character over time.

Beyond the product itself, what resonates with us is the philosophy behind it. Rather than resisting the effects of time, yakisugi embraces them. It’s a reminder that thoughtful architecture isn’t only about form, it’s also about selecting materials that will continue to enrich a home for decades to come.

Made to Belong.

Some of the most meaningful pieces in a home are the ones made specifically for it.

Not because they’re custom.

Because they’re designed for the way people actually live.

I’ve always enjoyed building furniture myself, and spending time in the shop has given me a deeper appreciation for the makers who dedicate their careers to this craft.

I had the opportunity to attend school with Thompson Limanek, founder of Green Seam Designs, and it’s been rewarding to watch the studio he’s built here in Bozeman.

Their work reflects many of the same values we strive for at Artifact. Honest materials. Thoughtful details. Furniture that feels like it belongs to the home instead of simply filling a room.

The best homes are never created by one person. They’re the result of architects, builders, furniture makers, artisans, and clients all working toward a shared vision.

The homes we remember are built one thoughtful detail at a time.

What do you notice first?

Where does your eye naturally come to rest?

A home isn't experienced from one perfect viewpoint. It's experienced one step at a time.

As you move through it, each space reveals a little more than the last. A framed view. A change in light. A favorite chair. A glimpse of what's waiting around the corner.

Many people begin a project focused on the house itself.

The floor plan.
The kitchen.
The square footage.

But some of the most memorable homes are shaped by something else entirely: the experience of getting there.

The drive through the trees.
The first glimpse of the house.
The walk across the bridge.
The transition from landscape to shelter.

Some of the most memorable homes don't reveal themselves all at once. They unfold gradually, creating an experience that begins long before you reach the front door.

This waterfront home is built into a steep, forested hillside overlooking Puget Sound. Rather than fighting the site's topography, the design embraces it.
