Nestled on a steep downhill lot in Hideout, Utah's Soaring Hawk development, this 4,200-square-foot residence redefines mountain modern living. Maximizing allowable square footage and flooded with natural light, the design prioritizes spaciousness in the main living areas. Comprising natural stone, wood, and metal siding with exposed steel beams, the house seamlessly blends traditional roof lines with contemporary design elements. The master bathroom showcases a unique wet room, merging the shower and tub within the same space. Due to the steepness of the lot, extensive boulder retaining walls were required. Interior design challenges included adhering to height restrictions while creating expansive interior spaces. Divided into a main house for the homeowner’s immediate family and a mother-in-law suite, it pushes the limits of interior square footage, building footprint, and height. This 1,800-square-foot office addition, seamlessly integrated onto an existing warehouse for a construction trade company, addresses the client’s imperative for administrative space and internal meeting facilities. Externally, the structure showcases meticulous design with natural stone and reclaimed lumber siding, embodying a modern yet sustainable ethos. Characterized by a cantilevered upper floor and a strategically sloped roof, the architecture is engineered to project a commanding presence upon approach. This deliberate design serves as an homage to the owner’s luxury construction firm, exemplifying a commitment to technical excellence in both form and function within this industrial landscape.

Filling an Industry Need

Throughout my years of practicing architecture, I have found there exists no standard for how much a custom set of house plans costs, or for what is included. I have been a part of projects where the set of plans has over 100 sheets for a single house, and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, while other projects’ plan sets have had less than 5 sheets, and cost only a couple thousand dollars. After spending years in the industry and finding most people only need a basic, good quality set of plans, with immediate and transparent pricing, I decided to found Budingen Architecture LLC.
