August and September is armyworm season in Pennsylvania and they can do serious damage fast.

Armyworms are moth larvae that feed on grass blades in large groups. They move quickly and the early damage looks almost identical to drought stress, which is why most homeowners don’t catch it until significant sections of lawn are already gone.

Here’s what to look for right now: brown patches spreading faster than you’d expect, moths flying up when you walk through the grass, and birds feeding heavily in concentrated areas. Birds follow the food.

If you’ve gotten two landscaping quotes and one is significantly cheaper, here’s what’s almost certainly different between them.

It’s not that the cheaper company found a more efficient way to do the same job. It’s that something is getting skipped thinner base, lower-grade materials, less experienced crew, or steps like drainage planning that you can’t see and won’t notice until year two or three.

A lot of homeowners don’t realize this, hardscaping doesn’t stop in September.

As long as the ground isn’t frozen, we can install patios, walkways, and retaining walls. In Bucks County that typically means we’re working well into November and sometimes beyond.

Here’s something most Bucks County homeowners don’t know about their lawn.

Wrong soil pH causes up to 70% of any fertilizer you put down to never reach your grass. The nutrients bind to the soil particles instead of feeding the plant.

Most soil in Bucks County is naturally acidic from rainfall, which means it’s almost always slightly off and fertilizer is always slightly wasted.

At W.D.B. Landscaping, we send out a soil pH test before we treat anything on a new program. Then we apply lime to bring it to neutral before the program starts. The difference in how your lawn responds is usually visible within one season.

If you’ve been fertilizing for years and your lawn still isn’t where you want it, pH is almost certainly part of the answer.
