Why Do Tree Roots Lift Sidewalks?
Many people assume tree roots "push" sidewalks upward, but that's only partly the case.
Most tree roots grow within the top 12โ24 inches of soil where oxygen and moisture are most available. As these roots increase in diameter over time, they can exert pressure on sidewalks, driveways, and curbs built too close to the tree. The result is lifted, cracked, or uneven concrete.
Not all trees cause the same amount of damage. Tree species, soil conditions, available rooting space, and the location of the sidewalk all play a role in whether root-related issues develop.
When selecting trees for planting, choosing the right species and providing adequate rooting space can help reduce the likelihood of future conflicts between roots and hardscape surfaces.
