April showers can bring May flowers but they can also bring heavy rain, thunderstorms, and other severe weather.
Spring is a time of year where the atmosphere is juggling between the return of warmth and leftover winter cold. That collision of ingredients creates storminess that can generate thunderstorms, flooding, big temperature swings and high winds.
Here's some tips from our staff to help you and your family stay a little safer this season:
⚡️Remember to run generators at least 20 feet from any doors, windows, or vents
⚡️Stay away from any downed power lines and never touch a tree, branch, or ladder that is in contact with a power line, as it can be energized and cause fatal electrocution. The tree can conduct electricity through its moisture, causing severe injury or fire. Treat all lines as live, stay 30-50 feet away, and call 911 or your local utility provider immediately
⚡️Replace old or damaged plug-in surge strips
⚡️Unplug especially sensitive electronics during severe storms if possible just in case of power surges
⚡️Make sure your sump pumps, modems, routers, and key home-office equipment have the right backup plan
⚡️Check that your carbon monoxide alarms work and have battery backup in case a storm causes an outage
After the storm has ended, be on the lookout for these signs as they may indicate a more serious issue:
⚡️Breakers that trip more often
⚡️Lights that flicker when equipment starts
⚡️A thermostat that resets
⚡️A burning smell near the panel or outdoor unit
⚡️Buzzing near disconnects
If your home has had any recent outages or repeated nuisance trips, do not ignore them. Small symptoms in spring can become bigger comfort problems in summer.
