Hundreds of Best of the Boot paper ballots are already in, so now it’s time for the digital vote.

Here’s how this works, for the uninitiated:

- Click the link in the comment section of this post to cast your ballot. Categories that had a large number of nominations are, as usual, write-ins.

- Voting will continue through the end of August and this is the only vote. In other words, there is not a second round of voting once finalists are named.

- Speaking of finalists, we will begin notifying the Top 3 in each category — and giving them their stickers — in early September.

- Winners will be announced exclusively in our award-winning Best of the Boot magazine. This year’s edition will hit the streets during the holidays, as it is only once our finalists are notified that we can begin curating the content for, and putting together, that publication.

With that said, good luck to all the nominees.

And if, for whatever reason, you did not receive your finalist sticker, a copy of the 2025 magazine, or your winner poster, send us a note in messenger or drop by our office at 219 North John Street and we will get you squared away.

The NCDA&CS has confirmed the first established presence of the invasive yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina) in the state, in Matthews.

Beekeepers are asked to watch for hornets around hives exhibiting “hawking-like behavior.” This behavior is a distinctive characteristic to the yellow-legged hornet as they prey on bees. Their hives are another distinctive feature as they can grow much larger than other hornets nests and have a reddish, muddy color to them compared to gray colored nests of bald-faced hornets for example. We shouldn’t have to share this, but we will….if a pest control salesperson comes to your door on a Segway, be very cautious. We do NOT force contacts, but have lost a couple customers that get scammed by these crafty salesmen tricking them into a contract. We have heard several tactics:

“We are doing your neighbors house so you can get a neighborhood discount”

“We actually work with so and so company”

There are numerous other sleezy tactics. There are actually lawsuits in some states, and a quick Google search tells you a little about them…even if you don’t use us, we highly suggest considering a local company in Wayne or Duplin County…be careful out there and don’t get tricked into a contract you can’t escape….

We would like to send our condolences to Josh and his family for the passing of his wonderful father Wayne. Please keep Josh’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Wayne never worked with Arrest-A-Pest, but he did help shape it unknowingly, as he was one of my very first mentors over 25 years ago at Orkin (where he was an absolute legend). He will be greatly missed by many. He lit up every room he walked into, and Josh is following those footsteps!

Arrest-A-Pest friends and family, please keep our staff in your thoughts and prayers. Our technician Josh is out with his father, tending to him. In addition to keeping Josh and his family in your prayers, we’d also like to ask for a little patience, as we are a small company and Josh is out indefinitely. Work will get done, but some things definitely come first. Praying for our little work family 🙏
