Having an outdoor nursery can be rewarding but can also have its challenges, mostly squirrels. They have made growing herbs, veggies, and palms from seed nearly impossible! Having exhausted alternative methods such as scent deterrents and cayenne pepper, I opted for a more proactive approach. By transforming an old dog crate into a secure enclosure wrapped in chicken wire, I successfully protected my seedlings from these marauding creatures. The cage's maiden test proved fruitful, with all seedlings remaining unscathed!

At Sarno's Tropical Paradise Landscaping, we prioritize building lasting relationships with our clients. A valued client and friend reached out to us for help in getting her house ready for the market. The February freeze had left its mark on the plants, particularly the areca palms, bananas, and mango trees, which required careful attention. Thanks to our team's expertise, the plants were restored to their former state, and the house is now primed for a successful sale.

Happy New Year!! We're kicking off 2026 with a new client who's handed us the reins on their container plants. These majesty palms and monstera were looking a bit rough, but now they're in good hands! We treated the palms for mealybugs, gave them a 9-month time-release fertilizer, and refreshed the soil. We even relocated a monstera to a shadier spot. We'll be watering and checking in weekly.

Need help with your container plants? Whether its maintaining what you currently have or creating new look with new plants, give us a shout and let's create your tropical paradise!

One of our clients is hosting a holiday party, so we gave these Pygmy Date Palms (Phoenix roebelenii) a fresh new look. We provide regular landscaping maintenance, including trimming and weeding, on a monthly basis. We exclusively use organic products when treating plants.

If you need help maintaining your landscaping, feel free to reach out and we'll come take a look. We also handle larger design and installation projects!

This holiday season I'm taking a little time to give some love to my nursery! Step one: remove all the pine needles from the area. Step 2: mix up some good dirt. Step 3: pull weeds and trim dead leaves from the containers. Step 4: repot and repeat!

I received a shipment of palms from Hawaii early this year and they are loving the Florida weather! I stepped all of them up to 3 gallon containers! All of these palms are considered rare but will grow extremely well in our climate! If you are looking for a super unique palm tree for your landscaping, let us know!

Species list includes:

Archontophoenix purpera
Chambeyronia hookeri
Chambeyronia macrocarpa
Chrysalidocarpus pembanus
Chrysalidocarpus psammophilus
Dictyosperma album var. aureum
Hydrastele beguinii
Kerriodoxa elegans
Ravenea hildebrandtii

Looking forward to seeing them grow a little more this upcoming year!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!

Earlier this year I began some air layers on several of the crotons in my yard and finally got around to collecting them. Air layering is a technique used to create a new plant from the branch of another plant. It's a simple process where you remove a strip of the outer layer of bark and wrap wet sphagnum moss around the area and seal it with aluminum foil. Then you wait about two months for the plant to generate roots and start back budding below the foil. Once you see the plant back budding, feel the foil pack and if it is nice and firm that means you have root growth and it is time to collect those air layers!

To collect the air layers I unwrapped the foil and used my pruners to cut the branch from the main plant. I then soaked the new root balls in a bucket of water to super hydrate them until I collected all of the remaining air layers. Once back to the nursery, I potted them up into 2 gallon containers with a time release fertilizer to help the new roots grow. After a couple months in the nursery these crotons are ready for the ground!

This week we worked on a property that is very special to us. It used to belong to a good friend who moved up north but luckily a nice couple purchased it and kept us on board to help manage the property! The property is around 3 acres and has one of the best food forests established on it! Its always fun to see what tropical fruits are in bloom each time we visit! This trip we helped clean up some of the bananas and of course are keeping tabs on the cacao fruit as it ripens!

Confederate star jasmine naturally wants to vine so to keep it maintained into a scrub we keep them trimmed! When we first started on this property, these poor things we over-trimmed, unhealthy, and barely produced any flowers. We spent months allowing them to grow naturally while keeping their shape by hand pruning. Today was the first time we used a hedge trimmer on them!

This week we had the honor of redesigning an island bed for a client. The bed was overgrown, full of weeds, and rather overlooked! The client only wanted to keep the large mamey croton so we designed a new bed around that! After removing the jasmine and all the weeds, we started adding all the new plants!

We added 52 new plants to the bed!! Species added include: orange birds of paradise, odorata bromeliads, Tahitian double bloom gardenias, Chinese perfume bushes, wandering jew, sunshine mimosa, Regina iris, aztec grass, mamey croton, and last but not least a Fiji fan palm (Prichardia pacifica)! Last but not least, we finished the bed with a thick layer of Florimulch.

Our client was blown away by the change this new bed adds to her house and property! We are excited to see how everything fills in, especially once the ground covers start to fill the space!

If you are looking to upgrade your landscaping, reach out and we can work together to help create your own tropical paradise!
