At Cane River Tree Care, we really don’t want to cut down your trees. We would rather care for them year after year, to see them live long, healthy lives supporting their local ecosystem and providing material benefits to your home.

Unfortunately, we recently had to remove 3 large loblolly pines (Pinus taeda) from one property that all died within quick succession of each other. Dead trees provide equally important ecological purposes, but definitely pose a greater liability.

Here are some native fruit trees going in the ground. These trees are used to growing in the understory when young, so they were planted in some nice dappled shade. Do you recognize these fruit trees?

Dead trees in your yard become a bigger hazard every day they remain standing. Limbs will begin to break off even on the prettiest of days. That could be major liability, especially if you have small children or pets.

This morning we removed a pine tree that died for exactly that reason. Now that it has been removed, children and pets can play without worry of limbs falling out on them.

Make sure you look up and check your trees regularly, or call us for a professional inspection!

The sooner maintenance begins on a young tree, the better its chances become of living a long and happy life! This water oak (Quercus nigra) volunteered through a rose bush. Opting to keep the native oak over the roses, here’s what we did!

Competing plants were cut away from the base of the tree as well as a Virgina creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) vine pulled out of it. Pine straw was pulled away from the trunk to expose the flare, but left to continue acting as mulch. Several competing leads were growing which would have led to potential co-dominant issues down the road. One lead was selected for dominance and every other leader was subordinated to a proper node.

We will continue following up with this oak over the years to make sure it reaches its full potential!

This afternoon we had to remove a dead post oak (Quercus stellata) that grew from a neighboring property. It’s important to not only look up at your own trees, but sometimes your neighbors trees too! This one was beginning to drop its dead limbs and needed to be brought down before it caused any serious property damage.

We can remove years of this and inspect trees for basal decay, girdling roots, and any other issues before they become lethal!

Just say no to volcano mulching!

Mulch should never be piled into a mound around a tree trunk as it creates damp conditions that can encourage decay and disease.

Instead, apply mulch in a flat, even layer about 2 to 4 inches deep and keep it pulled back several inches from the trunk. As the mulch naturally breaks down over time, replenish it as needed to maintain the proper depth.

Mulch helps protect trunks from damage caused by lawn mowers and string trimmers, reduces competition from grass, conserves soil moisture and promotes healthier growth.
