Old Wood Building

Old Wood Building Old Wood Building was started with the purpose of saving and restoring pioneer era buildings from the 1800's.

We specialize in methodically taking down and dismantling barns, cabins, and farmhouses with the goal to rebuild and give them a second life.

You spend enough time around a project like this and you start recognizing the moments when something finally makes sense. This was one of those moments.

A wide view from the Oxmoor Cabin project. Hundreds of years of craftsmanship in front of us, and plenty of work still ahead. That's a pretty good place to spend the day.

Not every restoration photo needs the whole building. Sometimes it's a hand tool, an old timber, and a few minutes spent getting the fit right. Those details add up.

Level in one hand, timber in the other. This was taken during a restoration project while we were fitting replacement logs into an existing wall. Every opening, corner, and connection has to work together before the next piece goes in. That's what was happening here.

Not every timber makes it back into the building.

Part of the job is sorting through what can stay, what needs repair, and what has reached the end of the line. This was one of those conversations.

How it started and how it's going.

The first photo was taken while we were still sorting, labeling, and working through repairs. The second shows that same section further along in the process.

A lot changes from one stage to the next, but it all starts the same way: one log at a time.

This one wrapped up recently.

The client needed a simple, solid place to keep a vehicle out of the weather without taking away from the setting. We built a timber frame carport with a metal roof and kept the design straightforward.

Turned out pretty well, and it fits right in with the woods around it.

I've seen a lot of people just carve out the bad on the face of a log, maybe all the way down the log even. And then rip another log in half and install a new face as a "skin". I've seen that kind of repair fail so many times. A full log replacement is often the prefered method of ours.
