We’ve finally named him instead of just “lil fella”.

His name is Rooster. 🐓 not because he’s mean like the kind we cull around here, he’s actually very sweet. but because this mf thinks he’s a CHICKEN. seriously. He imprinted on them so much he even tried sitting on eggs.

He did so very gently and didn’t crack and single one, btw. 🤦🏼‍♀️ yes, he sleeps in the barn “roosted” just like a freaking chicken.

Found some red clover and chicory (I think?) growing across the road so I’ll be figuring out a herbal concoction of some...

Life update while I make cookies 🍪 I accepted a new role at work helping uninsured patients connect with coverage options. laundry room reno continues, and we think we’ve solved the snakes-in-the-ceiling issue 😅 Just finishing mudding and sanding before paint and floors. Cookies are the reward for surviving renovations so far.

I’m tired of seeing devils advocate posts, especially by farmers/homesteaders, for data centers and AI usage.

The most common reason I see is “we need them to use Facebook and for content creation/marketing/etc.”

The internet has been operating long before this sudden influx of data centers. So have small businesses. We do not NEED this many of them whatsoever. They are killing and ruining our water supply, wildlife and farmland. they are loud and obnoxious and farm animals are having more and more still births because of the noise/vibrations of the constant humming etc.

If it’s doing that to our livestock, it’ll affect us the same way. It just might take longer. It’s incredibly selfish to see the negative effects and continue to contribute to it because you don’t think it’s affecting you.

Claiming any aspect of self sufficiency but not being able to write your own posts? I know a lot of us used AI to do stuff like this before seeing the harmful effects of it. However, we are actively seeing it now and it is time to step up and stop relying on it. Turn off your Google AI results or switch to Ecosia. Delete chatGPT. Stop using AI to make yourself look like a hallmark card or whatever the new trend is. (When you do this, you’re training these systems and allowing them further access to your biometrics).

Save our water. Save our livestock and animals. Save each other and yourself. Give the next generation something to be proud of instead of dilapidation and drought. Give them beauty and bounty. please.

Hard lesson learned today. 💔 One of my broody hens decided to move her chicks into the goat area today. I thought they’d be fine having access to the space or that they’d avoid the goats entirely, but I was wrong. One of the chicks was accidentally stepped on and didn’t make it. It was my only Silkie baby and it was so sooooo pretty 😭

If you’re hatching chicks with a broody hen, I highly recommend keeping mama and babies in their own secure, confined area for the first few weeks.

I have moved all 3 sets of mom and babies to the stall we usually use for baby goats in hopes that moms stay with their chicks and don’t leave them behind. They’re protective and caring moms so I hope it’s not an issue that I moved them together🤞🏻

I love to share the successes and wins on our homestead, but I think it’s important to share the hard lessons and losses too. Hopefully this helps someone else new to broody hens avoid the same heartbreak. ❤️‍🩹 I feel so horrible for it. 😞
