Job duties of Aluminum Fitter include positioning and connecting various parts by hand, using specialized equipment.
• Meeting the needs and desires of all customers in a courteous and professional manner.
• Requires set-up and use of portable burning/heating torches for steel plates and shapes using propane, acetylene, and oxygen.
• Lay out and fabricates steel and aluminum structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, and braces them in position within hull of ship for welding.
• Lay out position of parts within hull form, working from blueprints or templates and using hand tools.
• Locate and mark reference lines, such as center, buttock and frame lines.
• Align parts in relation to each other, using jacks, come-a-longs, turnbuckles, clips, wedges and mauls.
• Marks locations of holes to be drilled and installs temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding.
• Combination Aluminum welder fitter installs packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members, such as doors, hatches, brackets and clips.
• May tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.
• Rig chain falls and come-a-longs.
• Depending on size and weight of materials being handled, mobile crane or forklifts are used for handling and transportation. Also, depending on size and weight, the designated rigging crew will move the material into place.
• Provides a variety of skilled welding (stick welding, wire feed welding, Tig welding, carbon arc gouging) of steel and aluminum plate, shapes and pipe in the repair of/or construction of vessels and associated equipment. Responsibilities include initial set up, material preparation, welding, testing of welds upon completion and assisting fitters as required.
• Due to the majority of the work being performed on various types of vessels and equipment, there is a high potential for exposure to hazardous conditions; proper precautions and safety equipment (including fall-protection equipment) must be used.
