πŸ†”Osmundastrum cinnamomeum aka cinnamon fern! It is a species of royal fern native to the Americas and Asia. It is named for its upright, cinnamon-colored fertile fronds that appear in spring. Cinnamon fern has a fossil record extending into the Late Cretaceous of North America, approximately 73 million years ago, making it one of the oldest living plant species! The genus itself goes back to the Triassic!

It is a host plant to at least 8 species of Lepidoptera larvae. The β€œfuzz” (tomentum) on young fiddleheads is used by birds, such as yellow warblers and hummingbirds, for nesting. It is highly resistant to rabbit and deer browsing; mostly unpalatable to herbivores.

It can be found growing wildly in wet savannas, wetlands, floodplains, marshes, dry-mesic forests and subtropical prairies. It also thrives in open meadows as a dominant species. The cinnamon fern is a highly successful species and can thrive in temperate, subtropical and tropical ecosystems. It is great as a ground cover and in rain gardens, wetland and wildlife gardens as it can survive in both a variety of soils and sunlight exposure.

πŸ₯³Fun facts: The Osmundastrum cinnamomeum fern forms huge clonal colonies in swampy areas. These ferns form massive rootstocks with densely matted, wiry roots. This root mass is an excellent substrate for many epiphytal plants. They are often harvested as osmunda fiber and used horticulturally, especially in propagating and growing orchids. AND it often used in constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment (phytoremediation) due to its ability to tolerate waterlogged conditions and assist in nutrient cycling♻️

It is a host plant to the Common Buckeye, the Baltimore Checkerspot, the threatened Saunders’ Sallow Moth and at least a dozen other species of butterflies and moths. On top of that, it is the host plant for the specialist Mason Bee. It is visited by a number of native bees and is frequented by newly hatched bumble bees; its tubular flowers attract hummingbirds. Beardtongues in general fill a critical role for pollinators by providing pollen and nectar at a time when resources are dwindling at the end of spring. It tolerates deer and other wildlife browsing.

πŸ†”Asclepias viridis aka green milkw**d, green antelopehorn or spider milkw**d! It is a species of milkw**d in the dogbane family. Native to the midwestern, south central and southeastern United States, as well as to the southeastern portion of the western United States.

πŸ¦‹ πŸ› πŸ¦‹ πŸ› πŸ¦‹ πŸ› πŸ¦‹ πŸ› πŸ¦‹ πŸ› πŸ¦‹

Like some other milkw**d species, A. viridis is a host plant for the Monarch, Soldier, and Queen butterflies. It is one of the most important host plants in the southern United States for the generation of monarch butterflies that develop from eggs that monarchs have laid after spending the winter in Mexico. It is avoided by mammalian herbivores and livestock due to its milky bitter sap.

It can be found along roadsides, ditches, prairies, open areas, and overgrazed cattle pastures. Because of its shorter height and taproot, Spider Milkw**d does not tolerate high amounts of vegetative competition. It is tolerant of dry conditions and most soil types aside from very moist, and prefers full sun. At home, it is known not to grow well in containers as it must have ample space for its taproot to be established in order for it to reach maturity.

πŸ‘•πŸ‘–The name β€œBaptisia” means β€œto dye,” referring to some species (B. australis, but alba does contain pigments) in this genus being used as a dye. During the 1700s, Baptisia was cultivated and used as a, though lesser, substitute for true indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) when supplies were limited

Baptisia alba flowers are pollinated by bumble bees. The caterpillars of several skippers, butterflies and moths feed on the foliage: Southern Dogface, Orange Sulphur, Clouded Sulphur, and Eastern Tailed-Blue. It is a larval host plant for Zarucco Duskywing and Wild Indigo Duskywing. Deer and rabbits browse the foliage, and as a legume it provides nutritious, protein-rich food for them.

Blooming occurs from April to July, earlier in the southern part of the range. The species is native to grasslands, and can be grown in some gardens. It can also be found growing wildly in open woodland areas and prairies with tall grasslands- additionally along roadsides, hiking trails, and railways. It can thrive in moist, rocky, sandy, and acid soils- also tolerates clay. It does best in full sun; can tolerate both drought and seasonal flooding 🌧️ 🌊 Tends to perform poorly when planted close to black walnut trees.

⚠️ This plant is known to be fatal to cows and can be irritating to humans if ingested⚠️

It is a host plant for 14 species of Lepidoptera larvae, including specialists like American ermine moth, cecropia silkmoth, white-marked tussock moth, and currant clearwing. The flowers offer nectar to hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. It has vibrant fruits and foliage during the early autumn season which can attract rabbits and white-tailed deerβ€”who also eat the twigs. The bright orange-red aril that covers the seed provides a source of fat and sugar to songbirds, small mammals, and wild turkeys. The seeds are dispersed by birds and deer.

In the wild, it can be found in shaded conditions and wetland areas such as margins of swamps, shaded stream banks, and sloped wetlands. However, though it resides in moist areas, it is not a flood tolerant species; therefore, only being able to grow in moderately saturated soils. It can happily be used in rain, shade, and native gardens and is perfect for wooded and naturalized areas. It’s prone to suckering, which is ideal for letting it grow as a hedge.

πŸ†” Xyris spp., or Yellow eyed grass. They are more closely aligned with grasses than they are other flowering plants.
The genus Xyris contains over 250–300 species of perennial, grass-like bog plants. They also belong in their own family - Xyridaceae. There are at least 14 species represented in Louisiana, but various other species range from Canada to South America, Cuba and even Africa. There is a significant diversity of Xyris in the Southeastern U.S. Coastal Plain.

They are primarily pollinated by bees and flies, which are attracted by pollen rewards rather than nectar. 🌼The flowers, which bloom briefly in the morning, are frequently visited by specialized sweat bees (such as Lasioglossum zephyrum) that often open buds prematurely to access the pollen. Some species are wind pollinated πŸ’¨

They can be found growing wild in wet, acidic habitats like bogs, swamps and pine savannas. For landscaping, they thrive in consistently moist or wet soil. Boggy areas, rain gardens, moist borders and low/wet spots that get full sun are idealβ€”-they are very resilient perennials, however, they may require partial shade⛅️ in particularly hot climates 🌞

🏑🌳After a few non natives were removed and the space tidied up, robust, structural, evergreen shrubs were put in as a natural border area along the entire fence line.
πŸŒ²πŸ’Evergreen and deciduous fruiting trees were added within the fenceline planting for an aided natural border, wildlife support (of courseπŸ‡πŸ¦β€β¬›πŸ˜and to add depth.
