Dance to the People is a female and immigrant led collective of dancers and other collaborators who work in non-hierarchical forms of art making to address social and environmental injustice. We want to do this by fostering an exchange of resources already present in the community: our talents, networks, and ideas. Dance To The People originated first as a response to the needs of dance educators
who are lacking the resources (time, space, and money) to keep on developing an artistry that was their first motivation to devote their lives to dance. There are also the needs of dancers and choreographers who are always struggling to support their creative endeavors and the lack of resources to do it manifests itself by rushed, and superficial creative processes. Adding to this, the fact that funds for arts and education tend to be in jeopardy, modern dance is loosing an informed audience, which keeps making it more difficult for educators, performers and creators to advocate for the art form. So, why not all get together, share the resources we already have at hand: our individual talents, towards a common goal: to advance dance.
