Get Repost App • henrymooreinstitute Call for participation: The Moral Right of Skateable Sculpture

Conference, to take place on Friday 19 March 2027 at Henry Moore Institute, Leeds

Deadline for proposals: Friday 11 December 2026, 17:00

The Moral Right of Skateable Sculpture will bring together academics, artists and skateboarders interested in the emergent field of ‘skateable’ sculpture.

This symposium seeks to examine the recent history and contemporary moment of skateable sculpture. What new forms of artistic thinking, public interaction or critical response do these works engender, and what might it mean for an artwork to have the moral right to be skated upon?

We're looking for individual 20 minute papers to form part of two sessions, each followed by a panel talk chaired by Dr Ted Barrow and Dr Esther Sayers respectively. We are encouraging proposals for papers that bring new insights and critical perspectives to the field of skateable sculpture. This may range from the art-historical to practice-based, from skateboard academia to lived experience, or beyond.

Find out more and submit a proposal via the link in our bio or go straight to https://henry-moore.org/discover-and-research/sculpture-research-programme/calls-for-papers/the-moral-right-of-skateable-sculpture/

This symposium is organised in collaboration with Dr Harry Meadley Harry Meadley (Senior Lecturer in Fine Art, Leeds School of Arts, Leeds Beckett University Leeds Beckett Fine Art)

Get Repost App • The Municipal Art Society Beloved by planners and urbanists from all walks of life, The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces is a witty and relevant meditation on how public space is used and designed in New York City. Originally released in 1980, the film was digitally restored last year through a collaboration between Anthology Film Archives, MAS, and the Project for Public Spaces. Join us for a screening in our offices on Thursday, November 12!

Directed by urbanist, sociologist, city planner, writer, and former MAS Board member, William H. “Holly” Whyte, the documentary has gained a cult following and provides timely reflections on how our public realm can better serve New Yorkers.

A reception and guided discussion on urban design and public space will follow the screening. You won't want to miss it!

General admission: $15
MAS members: Free!

Get Repost App • Creative Time 📣 We are thrilled to announce “Consejos de las Estrellas,” a new public art project by Guadalupe Maravilla, commissioned by Creative Time and presented in collaboration with The Clemente Center in Synod Hall on the campus of the Cathedral of St. John The Divine (St. John the Divine) in Morningside Heights, Upper Manhattan.

Designed as a sanctuary space for respite, renewal and healing, Maravilla’s expansive sculptural installation will transform the historic, Gothic-style assembly hall with nearly 100 new sculptures and woven textile pieces anchored by a metamorphosis of the artist’s school bus “Mariposa Relámpago” and a resonant soundscape of gongs and a newly engineered vibrating floor, which will be activated by Maravilla’s weekly sound baths.

Maravilla sees his journey as an unaccompanied minor fleeing the Salvadoran Civil War in and his later cancer diagnosis as intimately connected traumas, which deeply inform his ongoing exploration of the relationship between the body, memory and the potential for healing. “Consejos de las Estrellas” will bring together a constellation of practitioners offering a series of free sound baths, meditations and performances, and will also serve as a hub for mutual aid, including food, clothing and toy drives in collaboration with local community organizations.

Aware that guidance can be found within a multitude of sources, Maravilla sees his practice as an ongoing dialogue with his community, spiritual guides, and ancestors. Aligned with the poetics of the project title, Maravilla invites visitors to listen to the counsel of the stars 🌌

“Consejos de las Estrellas” will be free and open to all from December 17, 2026 through February 7, 2027. The full schedule of programs and registration details will be announced in November.

Get Repost App • Powerhouse Arts Featured Project:

Powerhouse Arts collaborated with artist and poet Precious Okoyomon Precious Okoyomon and OSO Industries OSO INDUSTRIES to design and fabricate "The Pleasure Principle" as part of "Among the Flowers I Learned to Love: A Garden of Decreation", a large-scale sculptural installation created for the inaugural Courtyard Commission at MoMA PS1.

Transforming the museum’s courtyard into an evolving landscape of plants, sound, and interactive sculpture, Okoyomon’s installation centers around an oversized teddy bear that visitors can enter, climb through, and explore. The sculpture is integrated into a living garden of grasses, flowers, weeds, sedges, pollinators, and vines, bringing together cultivated and wild growth alongside native and invasive species.

Working closely with Okoyomon and the project team, Powerhouse Arts supported the development of the sculpture from design through fabrication. The team constructed the piece using a combination of steel framing, foam, fiberglass, and concrete, with OSO Industries serving as concrete consultants and advisors throughout the process.

"Among the Flowers I Learned to Love: A Garden of Decreation" considers the garden as a space for rest, transformation, and renewal, creating an immersive environment where visitors can engage with sculpture, sound, and the natural world.

The installation is on view at MoMA PS1 through 2028.

When I taught in NYC, the city was our campus. I especially liked teaching sculpture in downtown Brooklyn, ranging from two 19th-c Beecher memorials to Unity by ᕼᗩᑎK to plans by Kenseth Armstead for Abolitionist Square. I also invited Rich Garr to my classes to teach street art... Get Repost App • Anna Rodrigues How can we use public art on campuses to inform the work educational developers do at post-secondary institutions? That’s one of the questions my presentation at the Imagining Creative Worlds Symposium in November is exploring. It’s called From Hallways to Pathways: Investigating the use of campus public art and place-based education in the field of educational development. Another question I’m looking at is the potential of campus public art to support both classroom discussions and pop-up learning. Doing research for this project has given me the opportunity to photograph the public art found at Ontario Tech University campuses like this piece, Gate to the Future by André Fournelle. If you have a favourite piece at your campus, let me know what it is!
