Whose Street? Community Mural Project

Whose Street? Community Mural Project Whose Street? is a mural project commissioned by the Create Change Program of The Laundromat Project taking place at Know Waste Lands Garden in Bushwick

is a community mural and oral history project by Cooperativa Cultural 19 de enero (CC 119), a creative collective conformed by partners Raul Ayala and Fernanda Espinosa. This initiative has been commissioned by the Create Change Program of The Laundromat Project and is taking place at Know Waste Lands Composting Site and Wildlife Garden in Bushwick, NY. The outcome will be a mixed-media installati

on project informed and inspired by the surrounding community. It will address issues under the large umbrella of climate justice, and its intersectionalities with exploitation, displacement, and police violence. We believe that solidarity is a key factor to create a dignified environment across the different communities living in Bushwick. This mural's process and final product are meant to weave connections between the environment, gentrification, the lack of police accountability, and stories/perspectives collected from local neighbors. Our goal is to act as a platform to discuss solidarity and inspire us to work together towards reclaiming our public space. Finally, and most importantly, the project's objective is to open a space of empowerment for voices that often go unheard and to disrupt the dominant corporate visual landscape with images inspired by and for communities of color.

Dear all,
We are very happy to have completed [this phase of] the Whose Street? Community Mural Project . On Sunday, we installed the art at the Know Waste Lands garden (1278 Myrtle Ave). These pieces were inspired by short interviews and oral histories from folks in Bushwick. We also celebrated with many of you and presented this short video created by The Laundromat Project (thanks Line Break Media!). There are many people to thank and we feel very honored to have had this wonderful opportunity to talk to our neighbors and address multiple layers of issues happening in our community. Thank you to all the people at The Laundromat Project who commissioned* and supported this project at all levels, to all those who contributed their voices and time, including Sandy Nurse, Rosario Saladin and Bianca, and many others Bushwick residents who shared their thoughts through shorter interviews. Thanks to Know Waste Lands garden and members, to our Resident Ropavejeros: Immigrant Worker Art Collective artists: Sebas and Jesus, our many volunteers, including Jason Maas and the amazing artist Hilary Allison, and to the wonderful youth at BK ROT . Also, looking forward to extending the project to be part of Cynthia Tobar's "Cities for People, Not for Profit." Finally, thanks to People's Climate Arts@ the Mayday Space for providing space for us to work and celebrate and to Amy at the Columbia University Oral History Masters Program for your guidance. Forgive us if we are missing a name, you know we love you and we are grateful for you participation and love! This is only the beginning of a conversation..

Gracias!!

Dear family and friend, please donate to The Laundromat Project 's ! There are only 2 days left and if you give before midnight tonight, DONATIONS WILL BE DOUBLED
The Laundromat Project has been instrumental in supporting our work. First, through the Create Change Fellowship and now with Whose Street? Community Mural Project, one of The LP’s commission projects this year.
Without their love and continued support throughout the past couple of years, our community art projects, as well as hundreds of other initiatives across NYC, would have not been possible.

We just donated! Please give some love to this awesome and honest organization that brings so much light to our lives and neighborhoods!
Raul y Fernanda
