Last night, I was honored to join Rashèedah (RB) Brown, RB Real Estate Services, and the Greater Harlem Real Estate Chamber as a panelist, sharing my journey as a contractor, developer, and nonprofit founder.

Some of the questions I was asked — and my reflections:

What inspired you to start Bottom Line Construction & Development?
My background as an FDNY EMT and cardiothoracic nurse taught me discipline, service, and resilience. Building BLCD was my way of carrying those values into real estate and development, proving that minority- and woman-owned firms can thrive at the highest levels.

What major changes have you seen in the real estate industry, particularly in how it serves communities of color?
Over the past 20 years, I’ve seen both progress and persistent inequities. Too often, communities of color are overlooked. But, I’ve also seen the power of intentional partnerships and programs that create access — like our nonprofit, Youth Construct, which provides 11th–12th graders with ACED career pathways.

✨ What mindset shifts do entrepreneurs need to embrace?
We have to see ourselves as opportunity makers and problem solvers. That means moving beyond survival mode, into building systems, partnerships, and legacies that outlast us.

Grateful to share space with leaders committed to strengthening Harlem’s legacy in real estate and entrepreneurship.

🌟 The future of the ACED industry depends on collaboration, and that’s exactly what we explored at the National Association of Women in Construction Annual Conference in Boston. I was grateful to contribute to the panel “Women Leading the Way: Strengthening Architect–Contractor Collaboration for Project Success,” alongside my colleagues Sara Jazayeri, Barbra Massina, and Dana Cohen, who are driving change in construction and development.

I was proud to highlight Youth Construct, where we are shaping the next generation of architects, contractors, engineers, and developers. A special thank you to our Youth Construct Sr. Program Manager, MaeOla Bolton, who joined me on site to engage attendees, share brochures, and connect with potential partners who can help expand opportunities for our students.

Sharing my perspective as a contractor, developer, and nonprofit founder was deeply rewarding. It reinforced why I remain passionate about building not only structures, but also pathways for youth and emerging leaders to thrive in this industry.

🌟 I’m thrilled to continue this journey with NAWIC Greater New York Chapter 240, guided by the outstanding leadership of Yenisei Bell. Her commitment to empowering women in construction is inspiring, and I look forward to connecting our Youth Construct students with the mentorship, resources, and community that NAWIC makes possible.

This conference truly speaks to the careers of the ACED industry, and I left inspired to keep pushing for inclusion, opportunity, and excellence.

💥 Meet Ashley Pineda Uraga, a Harlem native, senior at Columbia Secondary School, and recipient of the Youth Construct ACED Award for Cohort ’25. This summer, she interned with Turner Construction Company, gaining hands-on experience that deepened her passion for design and architecture.

Outside of school, Ashley is inspired by photography, drawing, journaling, badminton, volunteering in nature, and time with friends—often with a camera in hand.

Her goals are ambitious: excelling in AP Chemistry, advocating for PSAL badminton at her school, and building a strong portfolio as she pursues Pratt Institute, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, Cornell University, and Rice University. Ultimately, Ashley dreams of becoming an architect focused on infrastructure.

Reflecting on her journey, she shared:
“Youth Construct made me more confident in my capability to pursue architecture. Life is a journey, and I will end up where I am meant to be – it’s about taking risks on my passions.”

Ashley advises future students to understand the commitment but highlights the program’s unique value:
“I would recommend this internship to anyone… For the experience and the knowledge, definitely.”

Her biggest takeaway?
“Whatever career option you choose, you have to love it. Even if you try something and don’t like it, it’s okay because there are other paths. You still have time to change—it’s never too late.”

We’re proud to celebrate Ashley’s journey and her recognition as an ACED Award recipient of Cohort ’25.

🎉👏🏽 Congratulations, Ehi Uwa! 👏🏽🎉
We are excited to celebrate your well-deserved promotion from Mortgage Officer to Assistant Vice President at The Community Preservation Corporation (CPC)!

Ehi has built a reputation as an outstanding speaker, subject matter expert, and community leader, with a voice that resonates across our industry and beyond. Whether at the Rising Urbanists Conference at the Spitzer School of Architecture, the Diversity in Commercial Real Estate's Diversity in Commercial Real Estate Conference, or in front of our Youth Construct interns, you consistently bring clarity and passion to vital topics like CDFIs, interdisciplinary collaboration, and spatial justice.
