American BioChar Company American BioChar Company promotes soil rejuvenation and plant health with biochar soil amendments

American BioChar Company believes that “The Beauty Above Comes From The Science Below”. This means that the natural beauty and fertility of the plants we see above ground are the result of a healthy, active soil below ground.

Ahh Spring…Ephemerals, Tulips, Daffodils, Crocus

For flowering plants, especially seasonal bloomers like tulips, daffodils, crocus, and ephemerals, biochar can be a turning point, extending bloom duration, intensifying color vibrancy, and improving overall plant health.

Biochar, a carbon-rich soil amendment, is a valuable addition to sustainable gardening for its ability to improve soil structure, enhance microbial activity, and boost nutrient retention.

To encourage crocus and daffodils to naturalize quickly, you need to create a well-balanced environment that supports healthy growth and self-propagation.

They need plenty of sunlight, good drainage, and an undisturbed space. Many bulbs need little care after they’ve become established.

Getting the soil fertile, but not too much nitrogen, is an art form. Years of experience have shown us that adding a biochar fertilizer blend is the best way to put nutrients into the soil for a slow-release fertilizer, as opposed to adding a nutrient cocktail every year.

That way, we aren’t disturbing the soil, and the soil biology is improving the soil structure FOR FREE!

ARE YOU CONFUSED ABOUT HOW TO GROW GREAT PLANTS?

There are a lot of products in the store. All of them tell you they're the best for growing beautiful plants. Are they? And are they only feeding the plants for a short time and then gone?

Potting soils and potting mixes with synthetic, often called "slow-release" fertilizers, are short-term fixes that leave you with sick plants.

Even if your plants look vigorous, if you're having insect issues, they are sick. Insects don't attack healthy plants.

Working with Naure, your plants can look great, have long bloom times, and be immune to insect and disease problems.

When you concentrate on feeding the soil and the microorganisms that are plant allies, your plants reward you with abundant blooms and harvests. The beauty above ground comes from the science below ground.

MOREL SEASON IS HERE!

Walks in the woods, especially under dead elms or ash, could bring you right into a cache of morels. What are the best spots to look?

>River bottoms, floodplains, and loamy soils

>Areas with spring flooding

>Disturbed ground (logging, blowdowns, edges)

And watch for when the Redbuds are beginning to show color. That's your cue to start looking on the forest floor for edible gems.

And if you need some help, here's a link to the Great Morel Sightings Map. https://www.thegreatmorel.com/morel-sightings/

If your soil is too disturbed, you won't see morels. You can create the right environment for edible mushrooms and increase fungi in your soil (maybe not morels) by adding VITAL Blend biochar blends. Then let nature take Her course.

Happy hunting!

HYACINTHS AND HONEY

The bees are gathering pollen on their legs and nectar for the hive. Many spring-blooming flowers have been bred for large blooms, but they have little nectar for the bees. The fragrant hyacinth offers up nectar and pollen for bees hungry after a long winter.

Early spring flowers (and weeds such as dandelion) are crucial for bee health. Using synthetic herbicides or pesticides may take care of weeds, but it also takes out a food source for pollinators.

When you use natural soil amendments such as VITAL Blend 5M you add carbon ot the soil, increase the bloom periods of many flowers, and help pollinators get a strong start for a busy season.

Snails: Slow Creatures, Intricate Rituals

Do you have the patience to watch a snail?

Their cruising speed is only 0.03–0.07 mph (about 0.5–1.3 inches/minute).

So how do they get ahead of us and wreak havoc on plants?

Because they’re already there — hiding under pots, tucked into mulch, or slipping along the edges of landscape fabric. And yes, you might mix them up with slugs. They’re cousins.

Slugs are the thugs.

Both are decomposers that help break down crop residue, but either one will happily switch to tender new growth if that’s what’s in front of them.
For all the bad press they get, slugs and snails are essential to healthy soil biology.
Their frass (waste) is microbially rich and feeds bacteria and fungi.

They’re also a major food source for wildlife — ground beetles, firefly larvae, birds, toads, frogs, snakes, and small mammals. In some ecosystems, they’re even a keystone prey species because they’re slow, abundant, and easy to catch. They turn low‑quality biomass into high‑quality protein for everything above them in the food web.

They struggle in disturbed soils or where synthetic chemicals are used.
That’s why at American BioChar Company, we don’t love slugs and snails — but we respect their role.

Our biochar blends enhance soil biodiversity by supporting richer, more resilient food‑web communities. Learn more at ambiochar.com

Ribbit, Ribbit!

It's spring peepers season. If you don't live near some pond or have a place in your backyard that gets wet...well, you'll miss out on this sound of spring.

Late at night, the chorus begins.

About when you can open your windows for an evening's serenade.

It's the mating song of many tiny frogs. To me, it's a joyful beginning of spring chorus.

Hope you enjoy it too.

Myco-Sequestration of Carbon

Myco- Sequestration – okay, I am making this word up! But the soil is jam-packed with mycorrhizae and other microorganisms, especially around the plant roots (rhizosphere). There is a huge amount of organic carbon bound up in the soil. For example, one gram of soil can hold up to one billion bacteria.1 So if we were to combine just the fungi and tree roots found within the soil, it would equate to about 60% of all carbon held in the soil.

It is a global advantage to promote these hidden soil communities that store organic carbon in our soils (carbon sequestration). Using VITAL Blend biochar soil amendment will also help sequester carbon. It is an organic blend of BioChar (fixed carbon) and Humates (active carbon). The BioChar will stay “fixed” in the soil for over 600 years. It improves the soil structure and increases soil microbiology.

WORM TUNNELS ARE NUTRIENT HIGHWAYS

Roots follow worm tunnels that are loaded with nutrients. When you add biochar, worm activity increases.

Earthworms are soil architects creating easy pathways for plant roots.

Better root development. Better crops
