BEFORE & AFTER -- During a routine dryer vent cleaning, it was discovered that a cage style screen had been installed over the exterior dryer vent termination. While the installation was likely done with good intentions to help keep animals out of the vent system, screened or caged terminations are not designed for dryer vent applications because they prevent lint from properly escaping the system. As the dryer operates, lint begins collecting on the screen, gradually restricting airflow and creating a blockage inside the vent line.

Restricted airflow can lead to longer dry times, overheating, excessive wear on the dryer, and most importantly an increased risk of a dryer fire. One of the most common places for dangerous lint buildup to occur is directly at improperly screened terminations. A properly designed dryer vent pest guard should allow lint and moisture to freely exit the system while still helping prevent birds, rodents, and other wildlife from entering the vent.

This is a perfect example of how even small exterior modifications can create major hidden safety issues inside a dryer vent system. Routine inspections and cleanings help identify these problems before they turn into expensive repairs or dangerous conditions.
