🌱 Keep It Tall, Keep It Green 🌱
With the hot temperatures and lack of rainfall we’ve been experiencing, many homeowners are noticing brown spots and stressed lawns. One of the biggest mistakes people make during dry conditions is cutting their grass too short.
Here’s why:
✅ Taller grass shades the soil, helping it retain moisture longer.
✅ Deeper roots develop when grass is maintained at the proper height.
✅ Longer blades protect the crown of the plant from heat stress.
✅ A healthy, thicker lawn naturally helps suppress weeds.
During periods of drought and extreme heat, we recommend keeping your lawn between 3.5” and 4” tall whenever possible. Removing too much at once can shock the grass and accelerate browning.
Other tips to keep your lawn healthy:
💧 Water deeply and infrequently rather than light daily watering.
🌅 Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation.
✂️ Keep mower blades sharp for a cleaner cut.
🍃 Leave grass clippings when possible to help return moisture and nutrients to the soil.
Remember, brown doesn’t always mean dead! Many cool-season grasses in Pennsylvania will go dormant during dry periods and recover when cooler temperatures and consistent rainfall return.
