You'll be in the attic this week. Look around while you're up there.

Getting the Halloween boxes down is the one time a year most people go up. Take a flashlight and check four things: droppings along the beams, insulation pushed into a pile like a nest, chew marks on wiring, and daylight showing where the roof meets the wall.

All four mean the same thing — rats or mice are already living up there. They're quiet at first. You don't hear them until the population grows.

Found any of it? Traps catch the ones already inside. Closing the way in is what ends it.

Red hourglass. That's the one to know.

Black widows don't build out in the open. They pick spots nobody disturbs — the underside of a fence rail, inside a woodpile, behind the meter box, the corner of the garage where the boxes have been sitting since you moved in.

Their webs look messy and tangled, not like the neat round ones between the shrubs. That mess is the tell.

If you find one, don't knock it down by hand. Clearing webs and treating the places they hide is part of every regular visit.

They come up the pipe. Not through the door.

Cooler nights don't mean fewer roaches. It means the ones living outside — under the mulch, in the storm drain, in the crawl space — start looking for somewhere warm.

They get in through the gap around a drain pipe, a floor vent, a crack where the slab meets the wall. Under the sink is one of the first places they end up, because it's dark and there's water.

Spray kills the one you see and scatters the rest into other rooms. We find where they're getting in, close it, and treat the path they're using.

Heard something overhead? Start upstairs.

By the time you hear scratching at night, they've been coming and going for weeks. Rats and mice go for the attic first because it's warm, quiet, and nobody goes up there.

Traps in the kitchen won't fix that. They catch what already got in, and they don't touch the reason it got in.

We go up, find what's there, and then close the way in so the next ones can't follow. Usually it's a gap at the roofline, a vent screen that came loose, or a spot where a pipe goes through.

Suddenly finding beetles on the windowsill?

They're not after your food and they can't breed in your house. Stink bugs, lady beetles and boxelder bugs are looking for somewhere that doesn't freeze, and the sunny side of your house is the warmest thing they can find.

They come in through window frames and attic vents in October, then sit still inside your walls until spring.

Vacuuming the insects inside is an endless cycle because they are packed inside the walls. To actually solve the problem, the exterior gaps need to be sealed by October.

Tonight your house is the warmest thing on the block.

That's why October gets busy. The first cold front pushes mice and rats toward heat, and the rain floods the burrows outside. Both happen in the same afternoon.

Mice and rats rarely chew their way in. Most come through what's already open: the gap where the AC line goes through the brick, a door sweep that's lifted, a vent screen that came loose.

We walk the outside of the house, find those openings, close them, and treat around the base before the next front gets here.
