This weekend, the weather should be incredible to check out the outdoor patio and fire/waterfeature at Bourbon Bowl! I designed the outdoor spaces here and the fire/water feature during the pandemic-and it is still the most awesome place to meet friends for a drink and a night of bowling!

A wood pergola is meant to showcase beautiful craftsmanship, create light-filtered shade, and define an outdoor living space. While a vine-covered pergola looks romantic in photos, it’s not always the best long-term design decision.

As vines mature, they can trap moisture against the wood, accelerating rot, mildew, and weathering. Heavy vines also add significant weight, placing additional stress on the structure over time. Routine staining, sealing, and inspections become much more difficult when every beam is hidden beneath dense foliage.

Maintenance is another major consideration. Pruning vigorous vines often requires ladders, seasonal trimming, and constant removal of dead growth to prevent an overgrown, tangled canopy. Left unchecked, vines can block light, harbor insects, and make repairs nearly impossible without cutting back years of growth.

Instead of covering your pergola, consider planting flowering vines on a nearby arbor, trellis, or freestanding structure where they can be admired and easily maintained. You’ll enjoy the beauty of climbing plants while preserving the elegance and longevity of your pergola.

Thoughtful landscape design isn’t just about how a space looks today—it’s about creating outdoor environments that remain beautiful, functional, and easy to care for for years to come.
