As a kid, I was responsible for pleeeeenty of drywall damage.

It was the 90s and my brother and I liked to wrestle 🤷🏻‍♂️ He liked to go through drywall 🤷🏻‍♂️

While this was fun and games to me as a kid, I realize as an adult that this would be really frustrating. These repairs can pile up, wear on you and even affect your home’s value.

Growing up in Omaha (and eastern NE, western IA), you're probably pretty familiar with this map.

But here's something that you might not be familiar with:

A potentially historic El Niño is shaping the outlook for winter 2026–2027. That doesn’t necessarily mean a mild winter in Omaha. Days of warmth could bring cold snaps and sudden bursts of snow can still happen. Warmer days followed by freezing nights also mean melting snow can refreeze.

Now is a good time to clear leaves from gutters and downspouts so water can drain, replace worn weatherstripping and reseal gaps around doors and windows.

A little preparation now can help keep your home more comfortable when winter arrives.

With colder weather approaching us, here's a little something worth knowing!

Weatherstripping creates a seal between your door and its frame. Over time, this can get flattened, cracked or just worn out. That is going to allow drafts to sneak through.

Good news, though! You don't necessarily need a new door.

Sometimes replacing a seal, adjusting the threshold or making a small alignment correction can make a noticeable difference.

Random thought...

I miss when houses had weird little built-in things.

Telephone nooks/niches. Medicine cabinets. Tiny cubbies. Built-in shelves. Little doors and compartments and just tactile things.

Somewhere along the way, a lot of that stuff got ripped out or covered up and I want to celebrate it still existing.

I know some of you have stayed true out there. What’s the coolest, weirdest or most useful built-in thing in your house?
